Do you like blonds, brunettes, or redheads?

Do you like petities, medium build, or do you like them larger?

Do you like white, black, Latina, or Asian women?

Like one's choice on a date ones taste in speakers also varies wildly from person-to-person. I work with a bunch of radio and television broadcast engineers - guys who are suppose to have a critical ear right? My boss swears by his Bose Accumass (whatever) satellite system's subwoofer but wasn't impressed by my SVS top-of-the-line subwoofer as it sucked the breath from his lungs.

When I bought the Z it took me a couple of months to gather the parts together and I up-graded the sound system. When that same boss got to listen to my pair of Kappa Perfect 10.0's he was impressed and went out and bought a random 10" speaker and put it in a home made box of some random size ... and asked me out to hear it.

I like my job.

Paul said it well. I'm partial to Dynaudio, but have heard some other brands that are equally impressive, just slightly different. All depends on your ear. Best advice is to go and listen to a bunch at different locations with different head units, amps...

I can recommend staying away from the big-box-store brands and shopping around the smaller "ma & pa" custom car stereo places where you're more likely to get a chance to listen to the speakers at your pace with your music. The smaller custom places will carry a couple four or five brands which is more than enough for you to get a test taste and find a brand you like the sound of. Then find another store with those same speakers and give them a second listen.

The best audition is to actually hear them in another person's Z. Recently I tweaked another member's system and we both found that we didn't like the sound of his (expensive) speakers but liked mine more. Before I bought my front speakers I must have listened to ten different sets of 6.5" componets. One of the many nice things about SoCal is the massive custom car stereo market meaning there are seven or eight custom shops in my little town.

Pick out a CD (or if you like different types of music, pick out a few CD's) that you are very familiar with. Take those CD's with you and listen to the same songs through different sets of speakers. How does the kick drum sound, how about the bass, how accurate are the vocals, are the vocals too sharp, are they hard to hear, etc? I even like to stand in different positions facing away or towards or to the side of the speakers. Note that the speakers will not sound exactly the same in your car, but you can get a good idea of how well the speakers reproduce the music you like to listen to.

Make sure that you are listening to these speakers with the same amplifier or the same settings if possible. Hope this helps. Let us know when you've narrowed down your choices.

Some good points here. Listen to as many speaker sets as you can. I have Dynaudio 3-ways, powered by a JL 450/4. That is putting 150W to each of the front channels. I think they sound fantastic, very clean. Dynaudio, Focal, and CDT Audio are ones I like. Of course there are other really good manufacturers, but those are ones I have heard, that I liked. On top of that, having a good subwoofer (or two) will really round off the system, and make you say YES, that is the sound I want. I have the Stealthbox, which I’m still trying to tune in. It’s only not bad. The Dyns deserve much better, something more musical, but I need to get to the spare tire.

FOCAL is the cleanist speaker I've heard. I have the 165V1's in my doors and behond the seats. The sound of these speakers are unbeleivable. Here sre some pics of mine in Nazar's door pods.

I am very partial to Focal as well, but will say that the new Polk Audio's are very very nice and to me, sounded even cleaner with no harshness. I have a lot of friends who love Dynaudio, but they never did it for me. I found an unused older set of a/d/s that I went with due to it being a great deal, and I love them. In the end listen to your ear because that's the only judge that counts.
