Should i get car alarm???
So how much for a decent alarm that will chirp when someone gets to close to the car and go off if someone touches it. I'm not to worried about mine getting stolen but I've had it dinged and keyed in the first week of having it. and I'm afraid it will get keyed again. I park away from everyone now so the risk of dinging has gone down. But I know people will still key it at the university i go to and the place i work at.
i was gonna spend money on an alarm system but since chances are that im not gonna hear it or if they smash my window or claw their way till the alarm sounds, whos gonna pay for it? me, so either way, im still out of money.......enjoy the Z

What's your point @ Efx,
I know about storage costs and probably will be using someone less costly than Public Storage BTW.
Are you saying the costs outweigh the benefits?? I just moved into a new house with a full garage, BUT...The damn garage door needs to be replaced and the garage is loaded with stuff that needs to be sorted into a shed (which has yet to be purchased) and other areas of the house...Will take a few months to get all that done, if not more!!

I will second that! I few years ago I bought a top-of-the line Clifford Alarm system and it was a pain in the ***! The alarm that comes with your Z is adequate.
The very best alarm system you can get is a big dog! Nobody will jack your **** with a big Rotwieler in your yard

I have a clifford alarm on my Z. If it wouldnt have already been on the car when I bought it, I wouldnt have spent the money. The 2 way pager alarms are good but are only good for a 1/4 mile. I believe that is only in a free open situation though. If your at the mall, I dont think the signal can go through the concrete walls, 7 couches at sears, and the ditzy blonde trying to get Johnny Rottencrotch's number.
Most people now dont even mind car alarms. How many times do you hear a car alarm going off in a parking lot and not pay attention to it? They are so common that people just blow them off, and pay no attention. No one is going to turn around and wonder if your car is being broken into or a cat is jumping across your hood. Best way to prevent it is to park in well lit areas where people are always walking by. If you park at the back of the parking lot to prevent door dings, thieves have an easier target due to not many people walking by.

aside from a paging alarm system, i was considering trimtrac and other gps locator devices that can be rather small and work to locate the car in the event of carjacking or theft.
in conjunction with a pager alarm, i think a gps locator is worth it.
im gonna be putting some nice money into my z and dont want to be a victim of a jacking or
theft without catching the s.o.b. who even goes there.
i went into a sams club and got a free nextel phone, which i contracted for 2 yrs at 29.95 and added the mobile locator for 15 bucks a month more. i read their brochure and they really have a number of features available with their gps enabled phones if you are simply shopping for a phone.
i believe nextel is the only cellphne carrier having this tracking feature available. i first realized about it when one of my clients used it to track their dump trucks thru their employees' phones
and run their dispatch dept effectively.
my first bill was 49 and change but worth it to me. i think the recurring with taxes will be roughly 42 dollars because they charge USF and all these little taxes on cellphones. i am not using the phone as a phone but its there with a few hundred minutes just in case.
if you use it principally for the gps locator feature, it still seems less to own and operate than buying a gps device (500-800) or better than lojack real time tracking types and the like because initial cost is like nothing!
the monthly cost seems a bit high at first but after looking into the cost of the gps tracking, these companies only track every five minutes, or longer intervals like 15 or 30 minutes for less monthly, I recall the price for five minute tracking was 60 monthly. so i am thinking i am still ahead.
i also like the fact that it is even a secret at this time as my wife and 15 year old son do not know about it, and i plan to keep tabs on my son as we just bought him a nice expensive car as well. its as easy as stuffing it in the car under the seat or somewhere close enough to a window to be trackable. but i think im more concerned on using it when we go out of town etc.
in comparison -the battery life on the trimtrac was 90 days, and do we all wish that cellphones ran that long, so either rig a battery chargin device if you are gonna really stash the cellphone or charge it every other day for an hour or so as you are home. its working for me at this time, so im satisfied enough to share this.
heres what i can get just by logging into nextel website any time of day or night in real time. here was my wifeys car this afternoon.

i also thought it was great because it tracks two ways as long as there is power to the phone, if the gps was not homed in on due to some obstruction etc, the cell sites home in on where the cellphone is based on the cell tower.
i have had this unit for about a week or two, my son borrowed my wifes car this past weekend after his car broke down and since he works at a not-so-good area of town
i stuck the phone between the headrest of the backseat and back dash where it cant be seen.
I checked it earlier and the other day because my son had to leave it overnight at his job, it is still holding the charge after all week!
so choice is yours, you can stash it in the car all the time like i have to locate 24/7, or just have it as a phone and if carjacked leave it there in the car, track whats happening with your car, or be creative and track "your" other vehicles because in tracking other people there may be some privacy laws that this may conflict with. good luck, cuz i think its a good thing and the price is fair.

I should get this for my gf too... fu*k the car... This is to see if shes cheating on me!!!!! >=)
I just re-po'd a car that a $600 Python alarm installed. 2-way, start-kill, screaming siren, the works. I had 1 single key. It took about 2 seconds to silence the alarm, then about another 45 or so to actually disable the alarm. Granted, the entire process took about 15-20 minutes because the guy came downstairs and started trying to negotiate to have his car left there. But, all that said, if he hadn't been around, or hadn't come downstairs, the car would have literally been gone in 60 seconds.
I figure, LoJack and call it a day. If you want your car back, you're gonna have to know where it's actually at. Just because your car makes noise doesn't mean people are going to pay attention to it. Think about it. How many times have you heard a car alarm go off and thought to yourself "Turn that ****ing thing off", or seen somebody /at/ a car with the alarm going off and thought, "Dumbass, learn how to work your alarm."
If somebody wants your car, they're going to get it.
