Laser is regulated by the FDA, not the FCC, and they don't seem to care, thank God.
Since I have had the built in Escort Laser/Radar I have not been stopped, not once, and they work like a charm. Everyone who sees it built in, and sees it in operation, wants one. I have it built into the center console below the heater controls, and an LED at eye level in the A pillar pod, the LED is green until "cop noticed", then red. The only thing left I want is the external speaker for the extra loud alarm. True, it doesn't have a directional arrow like the Valentine, but I really don't care where the cop is - I obey all laws until I know that the situation is clear.

That linked thread doesn't make much sense. He mentions the Passport SR7 but then says that laser shifters work. Well, the passport is a radar/laser detector, it doesn't jam lasers. Passort does make a laser jammer, the ZR3, which is compatible with both 8500 and SR7, but that unit isn't mentioned in that thread at all!
What gives?
P.S: Laser detectors cannot protect you from being caught, nor can they reduce the gun's effective range (as that thread suggests....kinda ridiculous, actually!). The only time they work is if you are lucky enough to catch a bouncing laser beam not aimed at you (terrain-dependant), or a beam through another car's windows. Laser, by its very definition, is "instant on". In other words, as soon as a detector screams, the cop already has your speed. Mike Valentine goes into great depth about that on his site and is very honest in admitting that beating laser is usually just your luck, no matter how good a detector you may own. Radar, on the other hand, is very easy to detect. But even then, the new instant-on POP2 is just as effective as laser. I suggest a visit to www.radardetector.net forums. They are chockfull of info on detection technologies.

I thought about doing this awhile ago, unfortunately the state of california has banned the use of any jamming material, wether it be radar or laser. Some states allow it and some don't so check ur state b4 doing this. And if u think ca is bad, virginia doesn't allow detectors.

OK as far as the Escort stuff, if I remember right, the SR7 is the built in radar/laser detector, the ZR3 is the add on laser shifters, and the SRX is both of them in one. They also sell the SR7 plus shifters for the same price as the SRX, so other than a slightly different faceplate, who knows what the difference is. I have the first two, when you put it together, it basically makes the SRX, a bunch of parts don't get used. The ZR3 can also be used with their regular suction cup detectors. The reason I did it the two unit way was because, believe it or not, it was cheaper.
Hope I got it right as far as model numbers, it's been almost two years since I put it in.

We had the Valentine1 and the PASSPORT 8500 X50 in my car as far radar detectors on same day, on same road with 2 other people. Myself and 1 of the riders like the 8500 and my other friend likes the Valentne1 due to the arrows. We like the 8500 due to the easy to read signals and not the mini letters. As to the arrows, I agree in the fact, I don't care which direction the signal comes from, I just follow the speed limit, after all, he/she won't care which direction he/she is coming from either. So why worry about it...won't make a difference whatsoever, long as a person slows down to the speed limit and stays there till all's clear, if that's the object.
