I installed subs and an amp in my friends 03 WRX with the factory unit, there is a small black box you can buy at most car/audio shops that has wires to splice into the head unit and also has Audio Outs for the Amp.

I looked into this before when i was deciding what to do with my stereo. This one car stereo place recommended the JL Audio CleanSweep. It looked pretty cool.

You can get a high to low modulator to fix your problem.

It is, as stated above, a little black box with speaker wires on one end and RCA jacks on the other.

Granted, it will have minor distortion due to the frequency change, but it will work as needed. I've done it in the past with stock Chevy radios.

Oh, and Radio Shack always has these and most Walmarts do, too.

This was done in my Z by the previous owner, when I changed out the stock head unit, I had to remove the converter boxes and plug the RCA cables directly into my new head unit. The following is a link to show you what the product looks like, I'm not vouching for the quality for the product in the link because it is being sold extremely cheap on Ebay and I have not history with the product, just wanted to show you an example.
