Exclamation JL Stealthbox

Found out today that JL is seriously considering making a Stealthbox for the 350. What they need is to hear about the demand. If they make it, will we buy? I for one will certainly buy one if available. I have had two vehicles with Stealthboxes already - they are incredible!
We need to let them know we are interested!
Email Alan Wenzel at JL. His email address is: awenzel@jlaudio.com He is the VP of sales and if we speak I think they will hear.
Thanks for the help and good luck to us!

I email them also and got a very nice reply. It think the more people inquire, the greater the chance that they will make one.

Good morning Frank,
As of today, we have no plans to build a Stealthbox for the 350Z. However the number of requests we've received for this model has been eye opening to say the least. I plan to review our decision at our next product planning meeting...probably next week. So keep in touch, it may happen yet. Any suggestions as to location or number of woofers? Thanks for your interest in Stealthbox!
Sincerely,
Don Vertrees

where would this stealthbox be located in the car? Sorry if it's an obvious answer, but I'm not familiar with the product.

Arrow More Stealbox info

For polar-md and those who may not know, a Stealthbox by JL is designed to provide superior bass while never being seen or blending in to where the sub looks like it is part of the vehicle. If you want to see examples check out: http://www.jlaudio.com/stealthbox/index.html

I used to sell JL products and I am very familiar with the Stealthboxes, I have had two (Jeep Grand Cherokee, new Yukon both with one 10). They are incredible! Trust me, you would not be disappointed. And we should not lose any room.
I have suggested to them that the enclosure go in the cargo area on the driver's side where the stock foam is. Very similar to what they made for the last 2+2 coupe. See pic: http://www.jlaudio.com/stealthbox/300zx_2plus2.html
I have suggested one 10W3v2, but I am not a tech. I think that should fit in a sealed enclosure in that area.

Keep the emails up! I think we are getting very close!

I suggested the same thing when I emailed them back. I even sent some pics of a few of the custom enclosures people have put there. I hope they build it. I really don't want to get involved with trying to make something out of fiberglass.

Default Stealth boxes

For those who can't wait for JL, Custom Exotica can produce fiberglass (or CF) sub enclosures. Better yet Custom Exotica can make them fit into places where JL boxes might not be offered, these enclosures can be built for any sub, not just JL. typical pricing is $400-$800 (driver not included.) Call 650-988-1004 or Email Erik@customexotica.com for inquiries.

I'd prefer the location to be where the stock BOSE sub is placed. If you don't have the BOSE (which I don't) then you could just remove the cover that's there. This way, no space whatsoever is sacrificed and it's totally stealth.

Stock location isn't very good for sound. The bass needs a little room to travel to the listener, not to be directed into your back at short range.

Default Sub Location

Mannishboy is right. The stock sub placement is not ideal at all. Bass travels in waves, the longer the better. Bose should know that. Most all of their systems use a bass driver coupled to a long ported chamber (Wave radio, Acoustimass systems, etc.). That's how they reproduce low frequencies with speakers as small as 3" to 5 1/4".
Also, placing a sub in the rear of a hatchback like the Z produces the "horn" effect. The sub will be amplified by bouncing off the rear glass and the wave carrying forward towards the front of the car.
Of course, JL has known this all along. Look at their other Stealthboxes, most all are placed in the rear of vehicles if possible.

Unhappy email to JL executive

I also sent a request to JL audio and got response back on 8-15-03. Here is the response:
"Good morning Joe,
Sorry Joe, but the 350Z project is only just started so I can't predict when it'll be available. I'd suggest you check back in another 30 days.
Thanks,
Don Vertrees"
