Default Sugestion on Components

Hi everyone,

Looking to upgrade my Infinity 6010cs Components.

I would like to stay sub or around $400 and get great clean sound. More than likely the woofer/ midrange will stay in the doors but I am considering putting the tweeters in the kick panels for more balanced imaging.

I will be powering them with an Alpine PDX 4.150 Amplifier. I will be adding a sub in the near future (if necessary)

Any suggestions would be nice - I've searched, read product reviews etc. and to be honest I'm confused.

I typically listen to Lounge, Acid Jazz, Hip-Hop, Rock and things with a nice kick-drum snare sound....

I could tell you what sounds nice to me, but you might think it sounds like a$$.

Everyone has their own tastes in speaker timbre. Listen to as many sets as you can to get an idea of what you like from your components. Try to listen in a car, but if not, at LEAST try to listen in a store demo room (not as accurate of real world timbre). Given your music preferences, you want to look for a set with really tight mids that can get down in the frequency range. Make sure you do some work on the doors if you haven't already to get them as solid as possible.

As for mounting options in the kicks, 16psibrick may have some solutions for you there. I'm sure he'll chime in here shortly.

Best kick drum/punchy bass you will find on a set of components is the JBL 608GTi. T

hey are not so good in the midrange region for female vocals ... but have yet to hear anything outside a dedicated midbass with the punch of them. The tweeters are bright for my taste .. but they are eq-able.

Other than that ... some CDTs and Diamonds should fit the bill for that genre.

I PM'd you about the Polk SR's, they have received great reviews, I wish I had mine installed already, but there is a two week delay with my installer. Doh!

To play off of what JimRHIT was saying, I will suggest Diamond Audio (I'm biassed )

Diamond Audio Hex series:
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?...roduct_ID=1138

These get low enough to cross them over around 75-80 Hz instead of 100Hz like a lot of other component sets almost force you to do. The mids in the Hex set will be more accurate in the 80-100Hz range than your subwoofer, so you will have more accurate midbass and your sub can concentrate more on the sub-80Hz range.

The link above is for the set with silk tweets, but they also have an option for aluminum tweets. I have the D6 series components that use the same tweets (mine are mounted low in the door) and the silk is PLENTY bright enough.

Thanks everyone, I'm sure with the info I have here I'll be able to make this decision very soon (within the next few days to a week)

As we all know, auditioning speakers in a shop is not the best environment to do so; way too many variables and acoustic nuances that come into play. Not to mention who knows how the in-store installers have EQ parameters set.

Has anyone used DLS, Morel or CDT components and enjoyed their sound? I've had MB quarts and Boston Acoustic components in previous cars, but I think I'd like to go a little different this time around.

I have not used any of the 3 you mentioned, but I have heard Morel and CDT. The CDT's are nice, but not as nice as the Morel's. DLS are nice from reviews and comments on this board. 16psibrick is an authorized DLS dealer and maybe he can work something up for you that will make you happy. Remember though - MID BASS!!!!

kicks in the Z coupled with DLS stuff have worked well for me.

DLS is known for:

1. extremely warm midrange and highs

2. decent midbass on the ultimate line

3. great off axis response so off axis kicks can be used

4. overbuilt (2-3" voice coils on the 6.5"!)

in your price range, you would be looking at either hte UP6 at just below 400 bucks, or the UX26 coaxial at around 450, both sound great i would probably take the UX at the price difference.

go to my site www.simplicityinsound.com you can see plenty of Zs with kicks and DLS, click on the pics and you can go to some of hte threads with all the pics and some of htem have customer reviews

I heard the DLS Bing sold to DVFLyer and can only say that they were very nice. Very, very mellow and detailed. They may not be the best for rap or R&B, but I can't see them getting tiresome on long trips and really seemed to feature detailed music. I recently installed my DLS RA50 amp and was really happy with the amp. Again, not as punchy as my eD stuff was, but in terms of SQ, it is a great amp. I believe Morel has a set of comps for $499 that caraudio reviewed recently. If I had the budget for a complete DLS system I probably would of done it, but the Polk SR's were the best all around speaker when compared to the JL ZR, Focals, and Boston Acoustic RA's and Z's.

How did you like the infinity 6010cs? Why are you replacing them? I want to know because I bought a set and have not installed it yet, lol.

Don't be turned off by the 6010's. I actually like them, but I know that I could have "better" speakers installed. I picked them up in "rush" and for very good price; well under $85 on the bay of e. Honestly, after I install my new amplifier, Alpine PDX-4.150, I'll know if these speakers are going to suit my needs.

I'm trying NOT to have to add a subwoofer to my setup, I have 3 12" Fosgate's (can't recall the model #) in my Expedition that I do not turn up at all...I've learned that I love clean smooth music, and if I can get good bass reproduction from a set of 2 or even 3 way components I'll be more than satisfied.

Sorry to go off on a tangent there...

+1 I like my 6010cs's but they could really use a better enclosure than the stock space and an amp. It also bothers me that I could have better too :P

Well, I was unaware you were not running a sub currently. Listening to the genres of music you listen to, you are most definitely missing some of the music without a sub. 3 12" subs might be overkill for your tastes, but i would seriously think about adding at least one 8" if not a nice 10" to your current setup.

I'm already keeping my options open in regards to subs. I removed the factory subwoofer, currently being used to serve meals to my dog, and the music is in dire need of bass.

I'm looking at an alternative to understrut boxes, maybe a set of 6.5" subs in locations for the rear speakers.

I have been considering these

Alumapro subs, I believe they are marine subwoofers. Based upon the type of music I listen to, and with the fact that I do NOT want boomy bass, these combined with a "better" set of components will round my system out nicely... At least I assume so....

If all else fails, I'll just grab the understrut box, possibly add poly-fill and a nice JL Sub....

^^^ OK, I was under the impression you had no plan to add some sub bass drivers. The 6.5" subs in the rear factory locations should add some nice punchy bass extension for you. Maybe see if you can modify the hole to fit a pair of 7" subs if possible.

Finally made a decision on my new components

Morel Dotech MKII

Although the speaker choice I made was not the tip-top of the line, they are still great and offer very natural sound. I was up at 5am extremely excited to install them.

Once again, no need for rear-fill... I don't miss it at all. I do however need to look at subwoofer choices now...

Midrange drivers are installed in the doors and the tweeters are surface mounted onto the kick-panels - I am now a believer as they sound great down there, took a few moments to get use to it but it sounds so much better.

Also, the tweeters may appear to be a bit high up, but they are out of the way of my size 14's and any other mishaps. Crossovers are tucked away behind the kicks; plenty of room for a 4" midrange as well....

Thanks to everyone for their input....
