Default custom sub enclosure- "spare" tire area

did some searching but couldn't find the info and AM SURE I've seen a few posts/pics of installs on here before regarding this.. anyways, i'm looking for a custom box to fit in that area where the spare tire sits and still allows me use of the trunk/hatch for storage. anyone know if somebody makes these and/or where I might find something like this? again, im pretty sure i've seen pics of custom work like this in members' rides, where amps can go down there, too, under plexiglass, etc, etc.. but i just can't find those posts! btw, i am considering everything right now 1 10", 2 10"s, 1 12", 2 12"s, etc, etc..

I was thinking of doing the same thing. It turns out that a custom box must be built...

Here's a thread link that I had saved in my favorites, hope it helps...

Sound Advice(or Tweeter depending on where you live) makes that type of box also. They make a really nice one with a plexiglass top to see through and light up if you want. It's completely flush so you still have the whole trunk area left to use. A little pricey but they guarantee it if any problems arise later. They will also reinstall it in your next car for free. Obviously this is only a good thing if you trade your car in for a newer Z later because the box will be custom made for that spare tire area.

n/p, but you should post pics if you have any. would like to get an idea of the work ppl have been able to do back there.

but i think i will either just save up $$ to get the custom work done.. or if I had the time, it probably wouldn't be too hard to set up.. my whole thing is I just don't know much about fiberglassing, not that you NEED to know it, but it would probably help.. i figure if you gut out all that foam, spare tire, from the back you can make a decent template for a box somehow.. but then.. i wouldn't exactly know how to measure the air space? garbage bag in the template.. filled with water, maybe? have no idea.. also, don't have the time really right now maybe a "winter project.."

I'm in the process of putting a 15" subwoofer in the hatch area. Depth is the biggest issue unless you want to raise the floor quite a bit. I chose the IDQ15 because of it's small box capabilities (1.5cu ft) and shallow depth requirements and even then, I'd have to raise the floor 3" to fit a square box with the sub firing up.

I've gone through a couple of designs so far and think I've settled on the final one for this sub. I'm still waiting for it to get here so things may change once it does.

Do you have any experience building with wood? If so, you could easily build a square/ rectangle box and lay it back there. Home Depot will cut pieces for you for a minimal charge, so you could buy a large piece of MDF ,have them cut it and all you would have to do is screw it together. Then use the hatch carpet as a template to cut a new "floor" and you'd be set.

PM me if you want some pics of what I've done. They're not really post worthy right now but I'd be happy to send them to you.

thanks guys for the great feedback.. i'm now considering 1) just doing the custom work myself for possibly a nice 12" back there or 2) being lazy and buying a fiberglass enclosure from ebay-tccustoms.

any recommendations on a great 12" w/shallow depth? was currently looking at the JL line of audio stuff, but those are not shallow by any means, atleast not to my knowledge..

i guess it's all dependent on the time issue thing for me, though.. of course, i would rather do it myself and be proud of the work + have it all stealth and to my taste rather than pay someone ~$300 for something that's gonna take up much space in the hatch, and maybe even block my line of vision, too! not good for me.. those blind spots are bad enough as-is! ..lol.

Elemental Design has a 130v2 that's relatively shallow (6.6" if I remember correctly)

^^(TakHteh) The sub in my picture has a 6.75 inch mounting depth. The factory floor board is roughly 7 inches deep. This was the smallest sub basket I could find in a high powered 12 inch speaker. BTW, my enclosure uses the car's metal trunk floor as the bottom of the enclosure. I did this to eliminate 0.75 inches of overall box height. Have fun building it.

JL Audio makes an awesome stealth box that fits between the rear seats and the strut bar. It even allows you to keep and use your spare tire. You lose very little space with it and it sounds great.

I don't think he's worried about the spare tire availability

I think Nitrousz has a pretty trick setup in the spare tire well with something like 7 woofers working together firing upward to act as a couple of 10" subwoofers. I would find the thread if I wasn't so lazy.

thanks for all the feedback guys.. am thinking about incorporating some of the different suggestions/ideas i've seen and heard so far into something pretty cool. again, don't know if I can really make this happen, but may just have to give it a try

DVFlyer, thanks for the info/pics, btw..

and vo7848.. i like your setup, my only concern is i might be constantly paranoid of putting anything in that hatch area with the sub "open" like that.. but I'm sure as long as you're not reckless with driving throwing things in the back, etc.. it shoudln't be a problem.. anyways.. SO, my idea now.. and to sort of "kill two birds with one stone" so to speak.. is to incorporate vo's setup and DV's info about the floor being/not being raised thing into having one or two subs in the rear, depending on what I can find space for, but have these X-amount of subs mounted to raised boxes.. carpet will obviously be cut where needed, and am thinking of putting little triangle-type and "carpeted" pieces around where the sub(s) are raised to give it that 3-D, popping out at you, "topographic" effect.. lol.. so stock floor height will remain the same, but the subs will RISE!! again, don't know if what's in my head came out right in writing, but i think i have an idea of how i want to go about this.. this would help eliminate any concerns i might've had about things bumping into the sub(s), if the sub(s) AND also any concerns about depth of the sub. just would lose the space where the subs actually pop out, that's it..

whaddya guys think, if you can visualize what i'm "trying" to say!?

Sounds like a good plan to me. Go for it! It's just wood. If it doesn't work out, take it out and try something else.

you can add one of those 3-bar sub grills. They look decent and protect the sub from foreign objects. I leave mine open because I never place anything in the back.
