Excellent write up. After 6 years on the OEM battery. It finally called it quits today. Picked up a yellow top and followed these instructions to the tee. All is well now.

'03 performance w/55,000 miles

I've had slow starts lately and then this morning I almost got stuck getting breakfast. Luckily there was a parts store 1 block away. Got the optima yellow top. Now, literally all I have to do is bump the key! Props to the original battery though. It's a fighter.

Haven't checked into this thread in awhile. Glad I could help more people. To this day my yellow top is still alive and kicking. It drained completely on me last week. I hadn't started the car in 2 months. I only had to jump start it. It completely recharged 100%...

Your thread definitely had me prepared to change mine.
I found a couple of easier steps, but I hate taking pictures. It took me about 25 minutes including getting my tools out and putting them back up again. Thanks for the inVO!

I am in need of a new battery and was looking at the yellowtops because my car sits in the garage 2-3 weeks at a time. I was looking at some duralast batteries from autozone mainly the gold duralast battery for $100. similar in specs:
*** 640 cold cranking Amps (800 cranking Amps) *** . -> 3 year free replacement <-. and best of all can go around the corner to have it replaced for free within 3 years. Would you yellowtop owners say to save me $100 and go with the duralast. I am only runnin 2 subs with a 600 watt amp

I dunno. My yellow top has held up pretty stout. Including being drained completely a few times, then recharged back up like new. My car sits for weeks and months sometimes. A quick jump start and few laps around the block recharges the battery like new...

Well, two and a half years later, your thread is still helping some of us. Big thank you!

Of course, I should have followed your instructions to the letter and put a towel around the battery... lost a nut at the bottom of my engine bay.

Thanks for the nice write up! The link you provided for the website that sells them is not working anymore! I just got mine from advance auto parts for $172.79 (including taxes)! You have to order online, put promo code VISA which gives you 50$ off and pick it up in the store!

Default New Optima Just Arrived...

Time to get the beast fired up. It's been out of commision for a couple months atleast.

One thing I observed. Optima decided to produce a less powerful batter than their predecessor.

The rating have changed.

Cranking amps: 770
Cold cranking amps: 620
