Default Need some help with this!!!

Just installed some new “Stuff” (can’t revel it yet) and im getting a lot of static and engine wine in my speakers when the car is on and more when im driving. Is there a homemade way t shield the wires from the static. I was thinking trying to use tin foil. But just wanted to ask before I tear it all back down and start tin foiling the crap out my car.

If you know where you are picking up the noise from, yes you can surround the wires with foil

Isn't the general rule for noise to relocate the ground(s)?

Trying to stop engine noise with foil is like trying to stop a bullet with foil. Do not waste your time and find the type of noise you are getting and fix the problem there. When I say the type of noise is because there are different types, some examples can be ground loops, RCA induced, power wire induced etc.,etc.

1- check ground on amplifiers , make sure grounds are 18" or less and that paint is removed from point of contact ,and whatever is the largest guage that your negative terminals on amp can have use that gauge not thinner

2- make sure your power wires and trigger wires are running down the opposite side of car than RCA , battery is on passenger side and power wire and trigger wire should be run down passenger side rca and speaker wires should be run down drivers side

3- if you are able take the factory negative ground off underhood battery terminal that is fasten to fender remove i think it is 8 or 6 awg cut new ground same length and fasten in same place making sure no paint is were point of contact is using a 0 awg or if you can't get 0 at least 4 awg but get zero

4- if you did not than replace rca's with a very good set from Stinger 17ft pro 2 or pro 3 interconnects

i am a Stinger dealer if you need help getting o awg wire, rca, 0 awg ring terminals or anything things along these lines PM me

if you do steps 1-4 not only will your noise be gone all these will improve sound

IMO, 99 percent of engine whine comes from:

1. poorly routed wires
2. bad ground (loose or too long of a ground wire)
3. band equipment (cheap amps can induce more whine)

the whole thing about having to shield your rcas or get the bet rcas is rubbish, i have done installs with the chepast rcas possible, without an OUNCE of engine noise, as long as its routed right, and the other gear is up to stuff

but if oyu can reveal what oyu have, it would help a bit...

OK, its not an amp or subs. (Those are already done) its a box that makes turns stock navi into a TV screen. it does have power wire and a ground but those are tapped right into the stock nav wires. The RCA wires are about 3 ft long running from the center consol to the dash.

You could try grounding the RCA's negative (barrel) directly to a chassis ground. There is a thread somewhere here (or was it ICIX?) where a member talked about fixing a Pioneer deck whine by doing this.

I ordered a new Ipod cable (one that plugs into the bottom), maybe the headphone jak is the problem. I checked all the wires and they are fine. If new ipod wires dont workout, then i will try the to shorten the ground. Tnanks!!!!

but you are not taking new rca's pulling the HU
pluging new rca into head unit and just run them outside window to amp and plug in to see if rca are bad

this is a fast test 30 minutes

Nope Did that test, RCA's are good. Its the box that converts the audio and video signal that needs to be shelded. I just cant find anything that would do the job.

I can't imagine the box needing to be shielded...... but I'm also no EE either. Have you tried grounding that box directly to the battery? Otherwise, perhaps it's a design flaw in the box.
