Default Alpine SPS-17C2 or Infinity Reference 6022i

I am upgrading my speakers, and will not/never be adding a an amp, this will all be running off my HU (Aviv D3). The reason I picked these speakers, is b/c I my friend can get and speaker at BB for half off, so I narrowed my choices to these 2, but can't decide which one to go with. If you see any other choices on there site let me know.

P.S: No my buddy can't give you a discount, and no I don't wanna spend $200 for some type r speakers.

That's fine if you want to just run some coaxials off the Avic. It won't sound bad, but before I would recommend EITHER of the sets you listed, I would recommend a cheaper and MUCH better alternative:
Hi-Vi Research CF160

Hi-Vi Research (aka Swan Speakers) is along the lines of Peerless, Vifa, Scan Speak. Very high end drivers. The thing with speakers is higher cost does not mean better quality. I would honestly say that 95% of the mainstream car audio manufacturers (the ones you see in chain stores, on Crutchfield, etc.) have inflated prices because they have to pay for their advertising, while these lesser known brands don't advertise so their cost is less for a better product. All their money goes to r&d to improve the product.

Here is their car audio line-up:

And here is the page for the CF160:

I think it would sound as fantastic as it could get running off of a headunit. Of course the choice is really up to you, but I just can't justify spending more money on a lesser quality speaker just because it has a name on it that people might be impressed with. Truth be told, Swan manufactures some of the worlds best home theater speakers.

Please note that any speaker will benefit greatly from even a small amplifier. By running off the headunit you may be giving up in the transient response of the speaker. Even a small 30x4 rms watt amp would yield significant improvement with any speaker. But again, that decision is yours.

I agree with Street on his selection of HI-VI research. I guess it would depend on what you could order those plus shipping,,,VS. the Alpine/Infinity -discount and local pick up. If you decide to go the Alpine/Infinity route,,,I would suggest going to your friends store,,,listening to the sound board. Bring your choice of music,,,,have him switch between the Alpine's and Infinitys. See which sounds best to your ear. Good Luck and let us know what you decide.

There sound board blows chunks, you bring a good point though after shipping etc they come up to around the same price as in store (its &50 for a set of alpine or infiniti). But 4 the same price which is better?

They are both on the same plane as far as build quality. Listen to them at the store and see which you like better.

I ended up buying the alpine speakers, I'll probably be upgrading the front speakers later on.
