Default Porting A Sub Enclosure

Hey guys,
I have a JL W6 in a box that doesn't really "hit" that hard...it's just small and practical haha. I was wondering if anyone has ever ported their box and how it worked out?

Also if some of the audio pros could help me out...I'm just looking to do a quick port with pvc until I buy a ZEnclosure. I'm just unsure of proper diameter and length of the pipe.

Anybody who can help, I would be extremely grateful! I'll post up dimensions of the box in the AM, just looking to see if anyone can help me...

Thanks!

if your box is small, just forget about it.

Well the interwebz is a great place for info.....

Per the JL site, the proper port is:
(slot port) - 1.25(wide) x 10.5(high) x 30(long)
Total face area of slot port is 13.125 (1.25x10.5)
http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_s...hp?series_id=6

So if you want to make the port round using pvc, you need to find out what size pipe will give you the closest face area to 13.125.

Using the formula for finding the area of a circle (A=Pi*r^2), we can figure out how to come close.

4" pvc has a facial area of 12.56

3" pvc has a facial area of 7.065 - if double ported is 14.13

These measurements are both a hair high because the I.D. of the pipe is not exactly 4" or 3"....it's a little less. So the double 3" port might be closer to what you want. That would be the route I went. Pick your poison.....it won't be spot-on perfect, but it'll get the job done until you can do it properly.

Excellent topic. I have an entire sheet of MDF sitting in my garage. I'd like to built a ported enclosure for my FI Q. It doesn't have to be anything special. I just want to see what it sounds like. Something I can just toss in the back of the Z and test....

Exactly, it's something I have never done and I wanted to play around with it. If I screw it up, it can be replaced with something better, and it will give me an excuse to spend the money. So we think 2 3" (diameter?) peices of pvc will do?? how long should I make the tubes??

Alright, so I don't remember how to find the volume of this box. It's a trapezoid, and I seem to remember A=1/2(base 1 + base 2)H

But thats for area of 2D figure, so I only get the area of that one side...

So, you're saying that I can just cut two 3" holes and it will be close to the right size of the port?

Two 3" PVC runs of 30" in length each will get you close to the tuning as recommended by JL Audio's schematic (in the link I provided above).

Alright...that turned out poorly. It sounds good, but it's ugly as sin. I'm too embarrassed to even post pics. I'll be ordering a ZEnclosure tomorrow, because I refuse to drive the Z with the sub box looking the way it does...

I will say, though, that it was quite a learning experience and I have never done that before. And, if I had the urge to do it again had all the right materials and could start from scratch, I could make it look pretty damn good.

WTF, we give advise and get no pics? That's not how it works. Post pics. I'm really curious...

HAHA alright guys...you'll get your wish. I'm not even gonna try to defend it either. I kinda half assed it at first, almost like a test fitting then was going to finish it up nice later. But I decided to abandon the project bc the amount of PVC to the size of the box is sooooooooo disproportional! hahaha

But, some guys asked me to post up pics of my car. So I'll snap a couple of the box while I'm at it.

I'm gonna go wash her now. Give me a couple hours.

I hope you're prepared for a laugh...it's BADDDDD!!! hahahaha

Okay here they are...
Now, put your beverage down and/or finish your drink. I don't want to have to replace anyones keyboard or monitor when they spit their drink all over it...

Edit:
Let me explain the corner pieces before anyone asks. I tested and discovered that the sub sounded better when the top two ports were capped off. So I went and bought the 2 black caps, which were the wrong size. and just so happened to fit the turn pieces. So I figured I would throw everything together and see how it sounds, then, go back and get the right piece later. Since assembling the corner pieces I decided to abandon the project and just buy a new box. So I just left it as is...I still can't look at it and keep a straight face bahahaha
