Default New FI Q 12" Spare Tire Well Project: Ported Enclosure...

Most of you guys remember my previous sealed enclosure spare tire well project. It's currently specs are somewhere between 1.25-1.50 cu ft.

It currently sounds great, but I was thinking why not make it sound even better. A ported enclosure would be the way to go for optimal sound, so I figured why not rip out the old enclosure and start from scratch.

Here's what I had in mind. Keep the same time set up, sub firing upward, with the entire enclosure still under the factory mat. There appears to be enough room left over under the mat to expand the box so it can reach the required specs of 1.8-2.5 cu ft. The only problem I have is how to incorporate the port. Would a slotted or tube port be the best? Which direction to fire the port?

Here's the specs FICarAudio list for optimal sound performance.

Q 12 – We recommend using a sealed box in the neighborhood of .8-1.5 cubic feet of volume (after all displacements for those wondering). (I personally think that 1.2-1.3 cubic feet is optimal imo)

Ported box we recommend using 1.8-2.5 cubic feet @ 28-33Hz (I personally think that a 32hz tuning is optimal, and has the most output and is still the most musical daily driving). Use 12-16 square inches of vent area per cubic foot of volume.

Here's some pics of my current design...

Any ideas on the port issue?

If it sounds good sealed, why change it? You risk making it less musical, losing some sound quality if you dn't build it to proper specs and with the dimensional barriers of the Z, particularly the depth, the right ported enclosure will be hard to obtain without totally eliminating trunk space

It's a chance I'm willing to take. True, it currently sound great. It just doesn't hit the lows quite like I'd like it to. I would like to drain this sub for everything it's worth. I believe I could tackle the project with regards to the dimensions. It's the port I'm worried about, being the box will have such a shallow depth. It's an idea. I'd like to brainstorm it and see if it's even feasible. If it is, I wouldn't mind the challenge.

I would love a similar setup, but my golf clubs would punch holes in my sub! Good luck Vo!

A tube port would be easiest to incorporate. And my initial thoughts are that it would be best to fire the port up. This could pose an issue of something falling into the port though. Maybe 350zspl could chime in on the port issue. He is more the port guy than I am. I am a sealed guy.

This is exactly what I've been brainstorming, ports firing upward through the carpet. I would more than likely need 2 ports, to achieve the overall length of port needed for tuning. I could place one to either side of the sub. I wouldn't be concerned with random items falling in because I never place anything in the rear hatch.

350zspl, where are you?

Would the ports firing right into carpet make a difference in their effectiveness and use?

Check out the quote from FI's site. They recommend 1.8-2.5 cu ft. for a ported enclosure(Q12). Do you think it's possible to build a box similar to the one I already have, under the floor mat, and port it?

I posted their quote in my original post...

i use a BTL 12" which i am selling , with its enclosure as i am going to 15" driver

my btl is in 28" x 14" x 18 "
slot port at 40 hertz

sub up port up

it is close as far as spl comparing sub up port up to sub up port back

so if going for loud either choice will do

if you going for deeper sounding bass sub up port back yeilds deeper sounding bass then sub up port up

as street 0c192 mentioned use tube ports

i would use either aero ports or precision ports

they come on 3" , 4" 6"

this way you can keep 2 sets of ports handy

1 set with lengths that achieve a desired tuning of lets say 30-35 for music ( to kill the lows) and a 2nd set to achive lets say 40-45 for spl for sheer volume

they swap with 4 screws in 3 minutes

if you slot your stuck with the original tuning you chose

i have my new enclosure done for my 15" driver
new enclosure i have is
30" x 14" x 18"
slot port
35 hertz
sub up
port back
3/4" mdf
1.5" baffle

raw mdf finish no carpet no paint

are you dead set on not exceeeding the carpets height???

I like the idea of interchangable ports. Killing the lows 30-35hz is what I'm hoping to achieve.

Not exceeding the carpets height is what I have in mind. This way, the rear maintains a clean stock look. If it is not feasible, I would be willing to alter it in some fashion. I do not wish to just build a rectangular box in the trunk though.

If I was able to build the box under the carpet, how would I fire the ports to the rear? Would it matter if the ports are under the carpet also, as long as they are not firing directly into the carpet?

we do not want the ports firing below carpet

how much space do you really feel is under that carpet after 3/4 " wood, after port , after sub

i can't see there being 2.5 net unless i beees wrong

Maybe not 2.5, closer to 1.8

Will there be much of a sound difference between a box that is 1.8 vs. 2.5?

if enclsoure is on the larger end of the spectrum it will be more efficient and peak sooner on less power

if the enclsoure is on thje smaller end of the spectrum it will be less effcient and you can throw tons more power to it

carpet i must think about

Understood.

If I constructed a enclosure higher than the factory floor, I'm wondering how I could do it in a tasteful manner?

I would hope to have the enclosure sit on the trunk's metal bottom, so I could gain 8 more inches. This way it wouldn't sit too high in the hatch.

If I did construct something like this, I'd have to be real creative on incorporating the stock trunk mat with the new enclosure...
