i have owned both JL and Alpine. I currently have JL. they are both excellent. JL is considered more high class compared to Alpine.
but as far as the two subs you are listing, i would stick with the Type R's. if you had the JL 10w3v2, that would be a tough decision.
but from my experience, the Alpine Type R sub woofers can handle a lot of abuse. My friend has a JL 1000/1 amp running to a 10" Alpine Type R in his RX-7, and it BUMPS. No damage to the sub or anything. I blew a JL 10W6 with a JL 500/1.
They are both good, JL is generally better, but it your situation i would keep the Type R.

i've had two 12" type R's in the past... really NOT impressed. I was running it in a to spec sealed box with the right amount of power. I'm surprised people are saying they "bump," do you people have any experience with sound systems or other set ups at all? Also, they seem to break frequently, as many audio shops have told me.

Both speakers are pretty good. As for my opinion I like Memphis. They have great sound quality subs are fairly priced, and come with a lifetime warrenty. If you are using the enclosure in the car behind the driver seat make sure they seal it well because it isn't sealed very well and that will mess up air movement.
