Default Opinions on JL Bass ****

Hey, i just picked up a JL Audio RBC-1 bass remote for my jl 500/1 amp.
http://sonicelectronix.com/item_4400...dio+RBC-1.html

but after reading up on it more it states that it increases/decreases the bass boost instead of turning the gains up or down. **** to all the way to the left is 0 bass boost and all the way to the right is +15 bass boost.

I know bass boost is not good for the sub but how will it affect the sound of the sub? It may be worth it for me to wear out the sub a little sooner for the convenience, but i might not use it if it makes the sub sound bad.

what should i do?? thx.

i had it for my jl 500/1 with a 10w7 in my eclipse. I used it for quick loss of bass if phone rang or passenger decided to speak. as far as affecting the sub i mean i just didn;t listen to it that loud and i dont think the stress i put on from going hard to soft bass was that big of a deal. just a convenience piece in my opinion.

I was told that i should tune it with the bass boost all the way to the max to prevent clipping if i turn it to the max.. so then when listening to my sub it'll always be + for bass boost. will that affect my sub sound negatively?

IMHO, If you need to boost certain frequencies in your sub stage "on the fly" you didn't do a good job pairing your equipment. The JL **** is a boost at a specific frequency, not a gain adjustment (as you already stated). If the **** controlled the gain, then I could see the point of it. But to have a remote **** to get +6dB boost at 38Hz (or whatever the JL boost is) is just ridiculous and is a marketing gimmick so you think you are getting something for your money.

When tuning, I recommend turning the boost to "0". The only thing that should be adjusted before you tune your EQ is gains and time alignment (if you have the ability). Everything else should be set to "0".

I used to do a lot of tuning when I was an installer. Of course in the shop we had RTA software that made it somewhat easy to get a flat response. I have never been able to tune to a flat response by ear for some reason. Some people can. I am about to break down and buy some RTA software for my laptop because once I install my new components I want to get a true flat response as my baseline. Amazingly enough, not too many people would like the sound of a flat response. It lacks the bass that most like in their music and it is a little shrill in the 500Hz-5kHz range, which is the most sensitive frequency range of the human ear. This is why the classic smiley face EQ setting is so popular amongst the general public - it drops the response of the freq's that their ears are most sensitive to so that the bass and highs can be heard more clearly.
