Default Stage Height in the Z

So, now I am running an active 2-way in the Z and have found that it lacks stage height. I am afraid to move the tweeters further up the pilars as the driver side tweeter will be right in my face. I will be going to an active 3-way setup, but not sure that the mids will help much with height.

Currently the Z images halfway up the dash, around the head unit.

Has anyone experienced this and if so, did it ever get corrected?

If you have decent stage height, how are you getting it?

Thanks!

I was having the same dilemma when I was building my system. I was going to put the 4" mids from my 3 ways on my dash but then we realized how out of place it will look.

We ended up with this...

Staging is honestly as good as I could ever ask for.

BTW... Audionutz CDs are the shiznit.

Where are your tweets mounted and aimed? Pics? Are you using time alignment?

This is the driver-side tweeter, which is aimed across the dash:

This is the passenger-side tweeter, which is also aimed across the dash:

I am using the H701 with time alignment on all channels, including the sub. I don't know off the top of my head what the settings are at, but it is sitting in the middle. It just needs to come up.

If you are going 3-way, play with the mid position a bit to try and bring the stage up. This is always the hard part of installing and tuning. There is no magical position or setting that will give you a perfect stage. I know this doesn't help you now, but since you are going 3-way soon, just try to live with it the way it is right now.

Thanks Street. I figured I would probably have to wait for my mids, but was just hoping... Ah well, just means I have to buy them sooner.

Get_Zwole, the Audionutz CDs are great CDs to put your system to the test. The IASCA and MECA judging CDs are pretty good as well.

Yeah, they are ridiculous online. They usually sell them for like $10 at SBN (this weekend). If they are still that price, I can pick you one up and ship it...

I just downloaded a Sheffield test (AT2B) disc from iTunes for $9.99. It has quite a few different test tracks. You could pick and choose what need and save a bit of money.

Some good tracks would be the channel identification tests and phase checks.

FWIW- Dom was down for my birthday yesterday (oooops, did I let that slip?) and got to listen to the system with the pods. Not sure if he'll make it by here but suffice it to say he was VERY impressed.... and will be looking for ways to mount his mids on the dash of his M coupe.

So I competed this past weekend at Spring Break Nationals in Daytona Beach, FL with Team Audionutz and my Z.

I competed in MECA SQ Street and won 1st place (unexpected). They did not mention anything about my stage height so I am happy about that. Unfortunately, It was a little left of center, but not bad. The woofers were quoted as being slightly "shallow" and the sub-bass at 30Hz was "lacking".

Being left of center was just a lack of seat-time for tuning. I was judged pretty early in the day so I didn't have time to do last minute tweaks.

The woofer issue is from being in the stock location inside of the door, which will be corrected shortly with Wicked CAS door pods so I am not worried about that.

The only reason I could think that I was lacking sub-bass at 30Hz was from the rediculous sound floor in the lot. They had the dB drag and SPL competitors very close to the Sound Quality vehicles. With all that bass around I am sure they couldn't hear mine well.

All in all, I am very pleased with my first competition and will definitely continue to compete. Hopefully I will have my 3-way setup before the next competition!
