Best Bang for Buck Speakers for Z
I can't stand the stock speakers. Worst speakers I've ever heard.
I don't want a box yet but need some quick cheap replacements that sounds good to a non audiophile. I don't care if it's used. An intermediate set of 4 speakers before I go all out and buy a box and new speakers in a year of so.♠

Budget?
Music you listen to?
drop ins for OEM location, or pods, or kicks?
Are you amplifying or running off headunit?
OEM headunit or aftermarket?
Will you be adding a sub down the road?

I listen to mostly punk rock and a some hip hop. About the headunit, I'm sporting an Alpine CDA-9855 and also am interested in getting a nav. I will get an amp and subs later but right now, I just want speakers. A set of 4 speakers in the 100-150 range, used.

Best bang for the buck I would give to the Peerless Definition 6 component set ($166/set), but it's hard to find them for sale in the US. Madisound used to sell them, but they've been out of stock for some time now.

Found these for a great price, very nice neutral sounding components:

I would get a set of components for the front and either just run the oe speakers off the headunit in the rear if you MUST have rear fill, or eliminate the rears altogether (my suggestion).
If you want a really nice set of coaxials instead of components, I would suggest the Hi-Vi Research CF160 ($34.50/speaker):

Ah man, I think the sale ended over the weekend, but you may want to check you local Best Buy (in store, not internet). They had all Pioneer speakers on sale for 50% off, I picked up a set of components for the front and some shallow mount speakers for the rear for $100 total. I was in the same situation, I wanted better sound, but nothing super expensive. These are being powered by my Avic-D3 right now, no external amp, and they sound pretty good.
However, Crutchfield says they don't fit the Z, and they are correct. I bought a piece of MDF board from Lowes (3/4 thickness) and cut out my own spacers/speaker mounts to make them work. Its no direct-fit job, but if you have a free Saturday you can make a lot of speakers fit that aren't really supposed to. Spacers for a lot of speakers is a must, the window won't clear the speaker magnet when you try to roll it down.

and a quick search on ebay and you'll find some spacers as well that will make the 63.7i 3 ways fit.

Sorry to bump this old thread, I am sure there are a lot new items since this was originally created. I am in the same boat and in the market for some new speakers. Nothing crazy just something like the title "Bang for the buck". What can you guys recommend?
