Default How To Tell If Amp Works

I have 3 amps sitting around now that I want to sell, but I don't want to put anything up that might not be 100%. How do I go about testing to see if these amps work properly/ nothing is fried? I could swap them into my car, but am not sure if that would sufficiently uncover any issues since I wouldn't be testing them to full throttle.

For what its worth, I have a JL 250/1 and an Alpine MRV-F345. The third amp is some off-name brand, will have to look tonight. That and the JL were powering a friend's system, and he gave them to me after selling that vehicle.

turn the gain down .. hook them up to a strong enough 12V power supply or battery, plug your ipod(or any other sound device) into the input, and hook up a speaker to the output (doesn't have to be car audio)..
if music comes out then the amp works.

Stupid question, but how would I hook something up to the input? Usually you would have a + and - wire going to the input terminals.

That would be for speaker level inputs. You may find it easier if you're doing this outboard for testing to get a mini headphone jack (from ipod) to rca inputs on your amp.

Right on, that makes sense now, thanks So the same thing would apply to a sub-amp too?

pretty much... an amp is an amp is an amp.. it just depends where the crossovers are setup and what the amp's response looks like in different parts of the spectrum.. but will still work.
