Help! My Nav is setting off my Valentine1
Well, I was so psyched today since it was the biginning of long weekend and my V1 arrived via UPS this afternoon. I ordered the V1 with the optional remote display so I could do the stealth install a friend of mine and others on this forum have done. Install was smooth and I have no wires showing. The V1 main unit is mounted on the back of the rear headliner and is not easy to see. The remote display is on top of the rear view mirror.
Of course, I take it out for a spin and the damn thing is beeping like crazy...I mean it won't stop! I am thinking there is something wrong with it. Not being familiar with the tones I am thinking its detecting X band door openers or something. I finally realized that it was the laser tone and it really starting to get annoying. After about 15 minutes or so, I close my stock NAV door and viola. No more beep! Open it up, and it starts again.
This all happened after dark so I have no idea if it happens in daylight. Will have to try that tomorrow. Short of having to move the V1 to the front, does anyone have any ideas of how to prevent the Stock Nav from setting off the V1's laser detection?
I thought maybe there might be some kind of glare shield I could put over the screen...who knows. I really like my install and am proud of it. I use my Nav all the time, especially at night. I really like the way it looks and didn't spend $2k to keep it shut. Any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated.

I can't imagine there are lasers in your Nav display.
But there IS one reading your nav map off the DVD drive behind your seat So the DVD-ROM stops spinning when Nav is off, makes sense. Might be a tough one so solve. Test Drive another 350Z that has nav, pop your radar detector in there and see if the same problem exists. However, I doubt if Nissan would replace your DVD drive for setting off your radar detector.

Thanks for the suggestion. That had not occured to me before.
I drove today for many miles during daylight with the the NAV running and no false Laser alarms. As soon as it was completely dark however, it started sounding continuously. I had a passenger hold a piece of cardboard in front of the Nav screen and the alarm stopped immediately. As soon as the card board was removed, beep beep beep. We did this repeatedly until it became clear that the light coming from the LCD screen was the culpret. It doesn't seem to matter whether the screen is full bright or dimmed. The DVD ROM is behind the driver and does not seem to be the problem. Not really sure what to do now.
At this point I am not even certain that placing the V1 main until on the windsheild will make much difference. Anyway, I don't want to put it there. Have to try some other solution.

The DVD Rom wouldn't be the problem anyway.
See, "laser" speed guns don't actually use lasers, they use infrared light.
As a result, certain colored lights can set off the laser V1 warning. I've seen this happen on neon signs, for example.
The fix is simple; mount your V1 on the windshield like everyone else.

I'm afraid you may be right. If I choose to keep the V1, I will probably have to mount it up front. I guess I can always return the remote display. Just kinda sucks. My positioning of the remote is barely visible from the outside. Would Hate to get the V1 ripped off. I am still considering putting some type of filter over the screen to see if that helps. I also plan to call V1 tech support to see if they have anything meaningful to add.

That's pretty odd!
Yeah, many things can set off a false alarm on Laser detectors.
I have the Escort SR7, and I sometimes get false alarms from neon lights and certain headlights.
Ya might want to talk to Valentine about your problem!

The wired remote is not a loss, even if you do mount the thing up front.
You could put it in the coinbox to darken the detector and make it less noticable on the road, for example.

However, laser detectors can't tell the difference between infrared from a laser and infrared from any other source.
I know the wierd 3rd brake light on some GMC trucks will false my V1. I guess the nav screen does to.
The best bet is to put the V1 where it can't "see" the nav screen if possible.

A laser just means the beam is coherent (all the waves lined up).

Well, I went out in the gargage last night to test the V1 with the NAV's DVD pulled out. Before I could even remove it I noticed that when I bounced a around a bit, the V1 was sounding. If I remained still, it was quiet. I tried moving the V1 so it was angled down more towards the NAV....Beep Beep...Angle it up and it remained silent. So I may have a solution here by modifying the rear mount to keep the V1 aiming a little higher. I will report my results.

ARRRGH!
OK.. WTF?!!!!!!!!!!
I got up early this morning, went out to my car, started her up, then a few seconds later BEEP BEEP full laser alert. This had not happened to me before! Why would it just start now? I have driven at night with the NAV on and no problem.
Now.. the only variable that had changed, is that I have never driven in early dawn light... but.. why would that matter?
Now the REALLY wierd thing.. if I turned off my headlights (but so that the running lights were still on) the beeping would stop.. WHY WHY WHY? Light on, BEEP BEEP. HUH?? Turning just the headlights off doesn't dim or birghten the nav, it stays in night mode.. sooo WTH?
It also seemed if I turned it on day mode the beeping would stop, my god, this doesn't make any sence!!!!
Tampa:
Did you have any luck with changing the mount? Perhaps my mount has jiggled out a bit so it's angled more?
UGH!

Still trying different things but I am totally confused now. Didn't change anything the other night and now problems for 30 minutes. However, on the way home, beep beep, all the way until I closed the Nav door. Go figure. Wolfman, did you finally get your DVD?

The car was not in the garage, and there was nothing to reflect the headlights off of that I know of. I tested it last night in complete dark, no beeps at all.. very odd.
Tampa:
No DVD yet It was on backorder with an ETA of Sep. 5th, but it still hasn't come in yet. It was on the planets when it got set off, but now it hasn't happened again.. very confusing.

This sucks. I was planning on getting a V1 and doing the "stealth" mount, but I have the nav and I don't want my radar detector beeping all the time for no good reason. Does anyone else have this problem?
