Thumbs down The Stock Front Speaker Grills Are Brutal

I was at the stereo shop today just to see what kind and size of speakers to replace the front ones. After taking off the door panels I saw first hand what I read on this site about the bottom right corner of window being a space problem. I then noticed the very poor design of the factory front speaker grills......they are only drilled out about 60% !!?? I then contemplated trying to drill out the plugged portion but quickly realized that I would just make a mess by scratching the finish. I'm still thinking what would be the best option but leaning towards replacing the p.o.s stock one piece 6.5's with 5.25 kick *** AVI's. This smaller speaker claims to put out better mid range then most 6.5's and it won't be blocked by the undrilled portion of the stock speaker grill. We'll see how it goes. I'll post a picture of the stock speaker cover and you will see what I'm talking about.

I have a solution for you. Setup your drill with a bit that is about 2/3rd's the size of the hole. Using masking tape, mask off all but the tip of the bit. Now, start drilling while on a flat stable surface.

The masking will keep your from damaging the grill. The smaller bit will allow room for the masking. No one will notice the smaller holes. Finally, the exposed tip will allow cutting. Seems like it would work fine. Remember, every tool has at least 3 functions that people don't use (hammer = beer opener) ;-)
