New speakers w/o crossovers, using factory Clarion HU
Ok. I couldnt take the stock speakers anymore and found that I like the D-series Pioneers component speakers. I had them installed and the guys at the autosound shop didnt install the crossovers and said that the Clarion HU was already filtering the sound to the speakers.
Question #1. Is that a load of crap?
Question #2. Would the Pioneer crossovers help the sound still using the factory HU?
The sound is barely better if at all now. Looks like the problem lies with the factory Clarion HU. My plan is to upgrade the HU and I really dont want outboard amps or a sub since I AutoX and PDX this car.
Question #3. What would be a good headunit that has:
a. clean, built in amplification
b. tone control that is more than bass/treble. Built in EQ would be nice.
Criteria for HU:
1. must play CDs
2. EQ more than bass/treble
3. USB would be nice
4. DD or Single DIN (no preference)
5. NO GPS
6. Video (no preference)
7. Bluetooth (no preference)
8. Satellite (would be nice, but not necessary)
9. Price less than $600
10. Removable faceplate would be nice.
Thanks in advance. ☺

Go to www.crutchfield.com and you will find lots of headunits that will fit your 350z. Just input make/model and look for anything that matches your criteria. Also before I forget.. crutchfield is a great place to find what your looking for, but it's also a bit too pricey so shop around. Now about your question.. First off, crossovers will help. Especially if they are component speakers. Crossovers help separate your mid levels from your highs, so if your using component speakers (which i think you are) then your speakers will sound cleaner.. hope this helped

Thanks for the responses!
Graffkid732, what do you like about the Pioneer you bought? It says 3band parametric w/5 preset curves. What is that like? Bass, Mid, Treble? I'm looking for a HU that has decent power for the Pioneer TS-D702 component speakers I have and adjust its ouput to diff. freq. Or, did you find that after chucking the stock HU, that you didnt need much eq'ing to acheive decent sound?
What else are you using in your system? Speakers, amp, sub, other???
Thanks.

aduhm619, I have used Crutchfield and thats fine. What I'm looking for are examples of what you guys are using, what you like/dislike, and the all important, if you had to do it again, what would you do different.
My initial concept is to just swap the front speakers. That has been stymied by the horrible factory eq'ing of the stock HU. Too bad to since it appears to have decent power. Now I have decisions to make like:
1. DD head or single
2. outboard amp
3. put in a sub
If I have a plan now and stick to it, I'll be much better off than doing it piece by piece.
Also, did you do any Dynamat or Fatmat or other modifications?
Thanks.
