Default alpine subs and alpine amp

quick question. i have two 10in type r subs running off a alpine mrp-1000 watt amp at 4 ohms. i wired it up they way the instructions said, but it just does not seem like its hitting hard enough. should i have wired them up at 2 ohms? or does anyone know any tricks to make them sound better. i tried tunning them but they just sound bad when i turn them up through the gains. its almost like a bubble sound the sub makes( if that makes any sense). please let me know if anyone has any ideas. also the amp is getting really hot!!!

what type of enclosure do you have them in?
Where is the xover set at?
are you using any bass boost?
Are the subs dual-4ohm voice coils?

The 300 watts per sub is a hair under their rated power handling, but it surely shouldn't be a factor in making them sound "lacking". What instruments seem lacking? What type of music do you listen to?

Is it the zenclosure with .75 cu ft internal volume? If it is, that enclosure is a tad small for two of those type r subs. Try putting in about 1/2 to 3/4 lb of acoustastuff and see what that does. And make 100% sure it is sealed all the way around both subs.

Try reversing the phase on the sub. Also make 100% sure the subs are wired in phase with each other (i.e. +to+ and -to-).

What are you crossed over at now? Try a different lpf cut off point and drop off rate.

What mids are you running and where are they crossed over?

I could sit here and tell you how you SHOULD set your crossovers and gains and everything for a flatter response, but everybody's definition of what a sub should do to their music is different, so while I like my subs crossed over below 80hz (currently running mine at 63hz @ 18db/octave), you may feel that it's not to your liking. I like my mids to pick up the duty of mid bass to bring my sound stage forward. Some people like VERY bass rich mids and will cross their sub over above 100hz. Properly matching your subs to your mids is a major part in getting YOUR mid-bass harmony. The truth is, the majority of the american public likes their music overprocessed, and therefore they don't think a flat response sounds good.
