Default removing the rear strut cover

hey all, Im trying to remove the rear strut cover and paint it since its all scratched up.
I searched and came up with an instruction that you have to pull the two sides, left and right, panels first to open up and then remove the center piece.
However, to remove the side ones, do i just stick a flat head and pull it to pop it up? i tried it and was afraid i might break something.. I gave a little force and it felt a screw was holding it..
is there something else i need to remove prior to pulling them up, or i just need more force?
Thanks in advance,
