Default How to: Installing amp and sub

Well, I got my sub, box, and finally amp. Now I need to know how to hook it all up. What cords to I need to run where? I know I need a 4AWG wire from the battery to the amp, but what else? Do I need speaker wire from the headunit to amp or to sub, RCAs, what? Please if you could help me figure out what types of wires/cords I need to buy and where I need to run them I would be most appreciative. Thanks.

I would use RCA from HU to Amp. A remote wire like 16 or 18 ga from HU to AMP. Ground wire to the Amp use 8 or 4 ga. Just ground to the nearest frame to the AMP.

Like jor8888 says.

4 ga power wire + fuse
RCA from HU to amp
speaker wire from amp to speaker
remote wire from HU to AMP (small gauge is sufficient since it only sends a signal and doesn't carry heavy load)

when running the power and RCA/speaker wires, don't route them next to each other. this can cause engine noise.

Most installers will route the wires along the interior side, under the carpet (under the kick plate).

Here's what I did:
1.) Ran 2 4 awg power wires from the battery compartment to the area behind the drivers seat along the passenger side doorsill. I ran them inside that plastic channel thing as well (was a pain in the *****).
2.) Loomed 2 pair of speaker wires (to run back to the connection for the front speakers behind the headunit) and the turn-on line, and ran along transmission tunnel into the hole underneath the power plug into rear storage area. I just ran new wires for the rears.
3.) Loomed 3 pairs of RCAs and ran them parallel with the speaker wires and turn-on loom.
4.) Installed 4 awg grounds (A power cable is only as good as the smallest wire--use the same size for ground as you do power.)
5.) Built custom aluminum amp rack for both amps inside stock sub area.

I noticed that the factory ground off of the battery is pathetically small (like 10 awg) so I ordered up some 1/0 awg and terminals to improve it. Also ordered some 1/0 and a distribution block to redo the power setup. I do not like the way the 4 awg power lines are connected to the battery so I am going to install the fused block inside of that area, connected with a small run of 1/0. I did not want to pay something like $80 for 12 feet of 1/0 and $50 for a fuse holder. I will have to make a bracket to mount the fuse block as well.

I would seriously recommend improving that factory battery ground if you are planning on doing any substantial stereo installation.

OK, all that kinda confused me so I decided to make a purty draw (with inspiration from Lor). The amp is a Xtant 6.1 (600watts rms), the sub is a Infinity Perfect (350rms), the head unit is a Kenwood in my sig... does my diagram look accurate?

that should do it. Don't forget a fuse less than 18" from the battery. Hint, remove fuse while routing the wire, if it shorts on the frame, it will smoke Or just don't hook it up to the battery until you have everything routed.

Better yet, disconnect the negative off the battery when you do the install.
