Default Direction of subs?

I've looked through all the sub pictures and it seems the two most favored sub orientations (for subs between the driver and STB) are either faving up and forward or facing the rear of the car. Is there a audio reason for this or is it just for looks? Also does anyone have any thoughts on MTX Thunder6000 subs? A friend of mine has 2 from his MTX box for his truck and said I could have them if I wanted. They sounded good in his truck (before he sold his truck). I'm thinking I might try my hand at building a box and was just wondering. Thanks guys and gals.

In hatchback vehicles, my experience has been that you get the best sound from a sub by firing it towards the glass hatchback or towards the rear of the vehicle. I have read that this is known as "cabin gain". I have the basslink and I wanted a stealth install so I put it in the stock location (behind the drivers seat) but the sound is not nearly as good as when I set it over the spare tire firing upwards (as a test).

The best way to face em is towards the rear. This is because everytime you can create a solid reflection for low hertz waves it can make up to a 3db gain. Hence reflecting off the hatch will make it louder.

I have a 12" in a Q logic box (temporary) that I have sitting on it's back so that the sub fires straight into the bottom half of the hatch glass. I can say that it definitely improves the amount of bass, as I had the same exact setup in my old eclipse (amp, sub, and HU).
