Default Speaker upgrade

Looking for some advise from folks with more experience than I at this. I have a 04 base 350z. I have a pioneer navi HU and a soundstream 4 channel 480watt amp. Listen mostly to new and older rock. Looking for clean rich sound with a budget of no more than 800.00. SO should I replace the door speakers witha solid component set like the Alpine R's and jsut add a small sub behind my drivers seat or replace doors and rears or ?? Lil help here pls

Components up front, rear-facing sub in zenclosure understrut box.

IMO, a sub behind the driver seat gets annoying.

Go with upgrading speakers over putting in a sub behind your seat. Here is my reason, for a sub to sound good it needs more room before the sound gets to you... there is about 8 inches from the back of your seat when you would hear the bass. If you want a sub give up a little bit of room in the back and you will be way more satisfied with the out come.

There is a whole bunch of technical terms that go in there but that's the quick and dirty of it.

Well the Zen closure would blow my budget, thought about components in front and rear and adding a sub later. I am not a bas freak jsut like clean rich sound so may not even need one although something like a small Bazooka might add jsut enough to make me happy. Main reason I was thinking about placement of the sub behind me is the room. this is my daily car so hate taking up any of the hatch space since there isnt much room to begin with !

Appreciate all the thoughts so far and would love to hear more !

I'm not a bass freak. I love clarity and response.

I did a budget SQ build. Here's the link if you're curious. https://my350z.com/forum/audio-build...-sq-build.html

Rear speakers are a waste.

Even with my midbass in the rear, they barely helped.

Was looking at some Pole Audio components on my lunch break today, forget the model but were 199. Any comments ? Not sure what sub to go with, they had a kicker that might fit betweeb the seat and bar. Love the Zen but would bust my budget...Polks and the sub would run about 500 installed which is where I would like to be,could go a little higher but rather not if I do not have to.

Any thoughts ?

awell this is what I have picked out atm, might change since I have 3-4 weeks before I will be doing it. JL 10w3v3 in a Zen under strut box. JL HD600 amp and c5-650 components in the doors. Not gonna use the Soundstream I have, might slap it and the kickers from my old car into her CRV lol.

Thoughts or comments ?

Here's what I run. It works well for me, maybe it will help you in your decision. I have a set of DLS UP6i components up front on a Elemental Designs Nine.2 amp, no rears, JL 10w3v3 sub in a zenclosure with a 500 Watt Memphis amp. I'm very pleased with it. The DLS mids are unbelievable - no matter how loud you go they stay clear. They also handle a great sound range - my high pass filter is set to 80hz, but I've seen guys with these speakers who run them at 55hz. Also, I don't see many people here say anything about it, but I had a hard time finding speakers that didn't have a huge magnet that the window would hit when it was down. The UP6i's have a neodymium magnet that is really tiny and allows for plenty of clearance for the glass.

I don't push the JL very hard, but when I want to impress someone it will shake the car. When I run it at a moderate level, it fills in what the fronts leave out and the system has a very balanced sound. The zenclosure doesn't take up much space, I still have room for golf clubs and big luggage when needed. And if I need every inch of space, no problem, it's easy to take out.

If you're on a budget, I'd invest as much as I could in the components and do a sub later. I originally had some Alpine Type-S Components, and the UP6i's are so much better. I'm glad I got rid of the Alpines and spent the extra money.

image dynamics -Great comps at a great price. In competition they beat speakers costing twice the price.

Appreciate the help. Basically the set up I am after but hesitant to buy anything I cant hear. The C5 series JL components sound almsot as good as their best and the dealer had those Quart and Hertz for me to compare. I liked the JL's the best although by a very slim margin.Only major difference is I am going with a single amp,a new JL thats 150x2 300x1 which should be perfect for what I am doing. Always open for additional thoughts and comments and if anyone knows a dealer in Nashville or if some one is nearby and has the DLS or anything else they think I should hear jsut hit me up !
