Default $140 for parts? head unit install?

Hey peeps, I'm not familiar with the Z's audio stuffs so I took my 03 with bose/nav to a local audio store. They quoted me for $140 worth of parts to replace my bose head unit, and he claims that since it's bose he needs to use special parts. Is this true? I can't imagine $140 worth of wires or for a special harness.....

What are you replacing the Bose head unit with? The Bose amps/speakers are not easily compatible with different brand head units. The remaining Bose stuff in the car will still sound like crap, BTW.

REALLY?? hmmm...good thing you told me that. Um, i'm not too sure about what i'm replacing it with....I was looking around their store when they came and told me that it was going to be $140 for parts. So they didn't even know what I wanted to replace it with.

The Bose system is the bad gift that keeps on giving. You pay more for it when you buy the car, and then more when you want to upgrade, since the whole system needs to be trashed. Your best bet would probably be to get the best head unit and front speakers you can afford now. Don't even connect the rear speakers and sub, which you can pull out and upgrade later.

It's actually pretty easy to replace the head unit and door speakers, and there are lots of threads here and elsewhere. If you buy from a place like Crutchfield, they include the appropriate install kit and wiring harnesses for free, along with detailed instructions, too. Check their site out, at least to get an idea what's out there and what fits your car.

Thanks for the heads up man! Im gonna check crutchfield out. I just think $140 is ridiculous for just parts. I've installed other head units before and never come close to that number.....Bose is like herpes, got it!

You dont need anything special to integrate with the Bose amp/speakers/subs in the car. I dont know why everyone on here keeps spitting that out. Any shop that trys to sell you that just sees Bose and thinks sucker. I know because I use to spit out the same thing when I was on commission. Shouldnt cost you more than $50ish in parts even at a Best Buy premium of 21.99 for the kit, 21.99 for the harness, and 14.99 for the ant adapter(cant remember if my Z or G needed it but one did) labor would run 49.99

Now with all that said on "some" decks you might not be able to use the full range of volume but that is the only loss. Like most Kenwood radios have a volume offset to fix this and alot of Pioneers volume range is 1-62 were 35-40 might end up being the highest you would want to go. In any event i wouldnt waste money on the module still because you will probably end up replacing the bose anyway. It sounds a little better with a new deck but not much.

A buddy of mine has an '06 ZR with the Bose system, but he's been turned away from a few local audio shops when he just wants to install a new HU. I can certainly replace the HU for him, but what parts do we need to integrate the new HU with the Bose. Aren't there two amps with the Bose - one for the main speakers and another for the sub? Any help you might offer would be appreciated.

Yes, the main amp for the speakers is in the trunk under the liner on the driver's side. The sub amp is attached to the plate mounted next to the subwoofer itself. As has been mentioned here previously, the Bose speakers will not sound very good with another head unit/amp combination, as Bose builds in compensation for the speakers in their amps. Best to just start over with new head unit and speakers.

dcains - you just need a regular harness metra 70-7550(you could use the 70-7551 harness but on this car the levels arent as off as some other cars). Both amps get signal off the 4 speaker outputs. Just wire it like a regular radio plus hooking up the amp turn on.

NttnbutaZthang - I did the same thing with the fronts on my Z and G. I am going to change them sooner or later but they have been hooked up that way for a few months without any issues and dont sound horrible. If anything they lack some highs but the rears I did change seem to make up for it.
