Pioneer P4200DVD and similar units - settings.
Hey guys,
I bought and installed the P4200DVD during xmas. I love the unit so far, but I haven't messed with the settings alot. I am running OEM speakers (non-bose) and want to know what settings make them sound the best? (ie. HPF, EQ settings, etc)...
also if anyone is running a set of aftermarket speakers (without using an external amp) using the headunit to power speakers, which speakers are you running and how do they sound?
When I missed with the settings a little, I got it to sound good but then when I'm at highway speeds, they dont sound too great when I have to turn the sound up to like 13-15.
any other tips/tricks/info is also great!

i have the same head unit...i am not using the HU to power my speakers...
pioneer avh-p4200dvd - HU
diamond audio d363.5 components - fronts
diamond audio d161.5 coaxial - rears
soundstream rub5.800 - amp
infinity reference 1060w - sub
first - i believe the volume setting can go up to 40...so 13 - 15 is not near the max...the more important factor is probably how does it sound at any volume setting before it starts to sound like its clipping (distorting)...that will tell you how clean the HU's power is...
your problem is probably more to do with the OEM speakers...
but i am using the crossovers built into the HU only because this way I know exactly what frequencies I am using...
FRONTS / REARS = HPF @ 63 Hz
SUB = LPF @ 63 Hz
I may end up using the bandpass filter on the amp for the rears in the future...but the rears dont matter much anyways...so idk...
you probably want to get rid of the filters altogether if you do not have a sub...or set the filter to 50 Hz if you really like to turn it up louder...but you will miss the low end either way...you can mess the EQ to get more bass / mids / treble...depends on how you like your sound...

dido i would like to know the settings . i get in my car a program it to certain specs and i think it sounds great till i get back in it the next day and it sounds like booty hole lol . i think im getting old
First thing you need to do is have a goal/plan for your whole audio system.
If your plan is to not have any amps/subs then you should just change your door and rear speakers. Do the front speaker grill mod and call it a day. Buy the best coax speakers your budget will allow. Turn it up to about 75-80% volume and tune the sound to your liking without distortion.
If you want some more serious sound....start by researching A LOT. I always recommend www.bcae1.com. This site is a great place to learn about everything car audio. Use the wire size/fuse calculators to map out your whole system.
If I can leave you with one thought........Cheap wires/poor install with high end components will sound worse than high quality wires/great install with mediocre components.......Focus on doing your install correctly like running rca wires on opposite side of the car of the power wire. Main amp ground should be to bare metal as well. Research, research, and more rersearch than spend, spend, spend than enjoy.
Questions??
