Default Radar Detector Hardwire: This or That?

What hardwiring method would you recommend?

to the fuse box (requires me to purchase another item)

End Result:

Extremely satisfied with it, was simple and well worth the money for the direct wire kit. The reasoning behind my placement is I find it easier to hit the mute button when its placed there since its just inches from the radio controls, very hidden not very noticeable from the outside of the car (Like from a cops point of view ;P)

Fuse box all the time. Splices in wires are gonna be problems eventually.

I used the wire tap from Blendmount . Taps into your power mirror , works great .

Fuse box
It's like $6 or so. Easy.

Blend mount tap in is retard proof... what type of detector do you have?

I personally have a V1 Valentine and it has absolutely no problems detecting anything at that level. My Z is a Touring so it has a home link rear view mirror, I was able to use this:

http://store.blendmount.com/mirrorta...350z-p659.aspx

It fit flawlessly, check to see if you have a home link mirror and if you do... it's literally a 5min mod.

98% of the time the laser detection feature in radar detectors serves only as a "you just got a ticket" indicator. -Meaning it doesn't alert to laser until you are targeted.

Your best chance of picking up "scatter" (shaky-handed LEO targets car in front of you and goes off-target enough to send some light your way) is with the detector mounted high in the Z.

Of course, "best chance" still equals "almost no chance" when it comes to early laser warning.

Belscort has caught and even surpassed V1's radar sensitivity (by a small margin) with their most expensive M3 platform (STi-R, 9500Ci, Redline etc) but they have yet to get anywhere near V1's laser detection abilities.

That condenser lens setup is ridiculous. However, I still consider early laser warning with the V1 to require a great deal of luck. My V1 alerts me before I'm targeted < 10% of the time.

FWIW, the V1 still maintains an edge over all Belscorts when it comes to radar reactivity and responsiveness.

I have the touring as well, and I know I have home link. I will keep this in mind, I don't really want to spend another $100+ bucks on the wire and the rearview mirror mount at the moment lol.

Alright, that makes sense but if I'm 98% of the time going to get screwed by a laser I might keep it down low lol. Its more convenient for me to look at my radar detector when its low since I set my speedometer to display beside my oil pressure gauge.

Thank you everyone for the tips, Advice, and information! I found a lot of new things I wasn't aware of thanks to you guys.

In all reality if you get popped by laser your done anyway... they aim it directly at the car so it pretty low key. A lot of depts in FL don't use laser all that much... OP where are you located?

Your halfway done if you just have a radar detector. It helps to have a jammer with your laser detector.....I could be wrong but I've been told the higher your detector, the better it works

yea it may when in a truck vs a sports car but not by 12"... a true jammer is illegal as you need a license from the FCC to jam any bandwidth. LEO's know they're being jammed but don't know they're being detected.

Maybe AZ is different than everywhere else, but I've only had a ticket list "radar" as the speed detection method once. I've gone by Highway Patrol who were standing next to their car/motorcycle with the radar gun, while I was going 80 MPH (65 limit) and they didn't seem to care lol

Radar jamming is illegal, but laser jamming is usually not.

Laser jamming is illegal in: Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois, and Washington DC. Similarly, radar detectors are illegal in Virginia and Washington DC. Both of those states use spectre, which can detect radar detectors. Radar jamming is illegal nation-wide.

Here's a good list of what bands are used in your state and county:

http://www.patzcatz.com/radarbands.html

Look at what your state uses (or states around you if you travel around), and you can determine what you need.

Personally, I live in a state where laser is illegal to be used (Pennsylvania), thus having no need for laser jammers. Only bands used state-wide here are K/KA (instant on, so it's kind of annoying if you're the first in line to get hit). Also, take a look at veil, which is applied on your headlights. Usually, troopers aim at reflecting objects (headlights, front license plate if it's there), and from what I understand, veil makes it harder to get your speed, or at least gives you enough time to slow down before they can read your speed.

Veil is used against laser... and it's not really all that effective by itself. It's usually used to improve the performance of a laser jammer... although most new laser jammers don't require any help.

Im in the panhandle of florida but commute almost monthly to St. Petersburge/Orlando. Check the OP for the setup and direct wire kit placement I went with.
