Default Subwoofer box rattle.... or not?

Hey guys.

I've got a 10" zenclosure type 2 box for my JL sub.

I've got the car dynamatted at the doors, and i've got that whole rear panel dynamatted as well (some parts of it are even double layered). However my car STILL rattles at certain frequencies, and I'm not even pushing the sub anywhere near its max. The rattling mainly comes from the rear panel area, that entire section, only during particular frequency ranges. If I listen to, say, Deadmau5 - Ghosts n Stuff, the song has a great beat to it and I can push it loud without suffering any rattling. But other songs, like Above & Beyond's Alchemy, will rattle. Same goes for certain rap songs like Lil Wayne - She will (no rattles), and then I go and listen to another song and it'll rattle.

When I inspect where the majority of the rattling is coming from, it seems to be coming from the box itself. I mean, how can that rear panel still vibrate so much in specific frequency ranges when I've literally got a double layer of dynamatt back there? We made sure to fill every single damn section with dynamatt, and hit it hard with our hands to make sure the hollow noise is gone and ensure proper insulation.

One of the guys who helped install my system suggested dynamatting the inside of my zenclosure box to see if that will fix the problem. I replaced my old blown sub with a new JL, so I know its not my sub that's blown or anything.

Anyway I'm at a loss... sometimes the rattling is down to a minimum on a hot day, and horrible in the mornings. I love listening to a huge variety of music depending on my mood. It would be great if I can solve this. Does anyone have any recommendations for me as to what steps I need to take to fix this?

Did you Dynamat the body panels only or did you dynamat the back side of the interior plastic trim pieces as well? I found that you have to do both if you want the rattles to go away. You don't need 100% coverage, but at least 50-60% (strategically located throughout the rear hatch area.) Don't dynamat the inside of the sub box; use Polyfill instead. Is your sub box ported or sealed?

This is exactly the kind of response I was looking for. Thank you so much. I have not dynamatted the inside of the plastic, just the body panels!! And what's the benefit of polyfill? I have no idea what the difference is between a ported and sealed box is. I think its sealed... I'm totally going to check out dynamatting the inside of the plastic. I think it'll solve my issue!

I always use a spray sound deadener on the inside of speaker boxes . Polyfill is not a sound deadener . The only time polyfill should be used , is if your enclosure is a little smaller than the recommended internal volume . Polyfill makes a speaker think it's in a larger enclosure than it is .

So what exactly will the spray deadner help with? My box doesn't make any noises that I'd otherwise find weird.... What's a good product to use??

Sound deadening the inside of a box helps to keep the resonance as low as possible . I've used Cascade VB-1 spray for 20 + years and like it very much(partsexpress.com).

The dynamat will stop your metal pannels from vibrating, which is great. I hate when someone drives by and you can hear their trunk rattling.

On my last car I had a huge problem with the plastic pannels vibrating against the metal chasis, which made annoying noise. Dynamating will not help this. I found the best solution was to buy a soft foam, and duct tape it to the back side of the interrior plastic pannels. For some stubborn pannels that Id never remove, like the ones on the top of the trunk lid, i just filled them with great stuff expanding foam.

Eliminating rattles is a painstaking process. Good luck bro.
