Default Permanent Wiring of radar detector

Somebody most likely posted this already. Where do you all wire up your radar detectors so they turn on when you turn on the car? I was going to pop open that litle cover down there by the clutch and see what I could do.

I wanted to mount mine by the rear view mirror, but every installer I spoke to that knew what they where doing told me it was a bad idea due to the dot matrix.

One shop I went to told me the best thing I could do was mount it in the middle right by the windshield. That, however, would require a custom mount and would cost upwards of $400.00. I just didn't think that spending $400.00 mounting fees on a $400.00 radar detector made a lot of sense.

If you find a good point to mount a radar detector without incurring more than $100.00, please let us know.

I have mine suction cupped to the windshield....the display reads out right under the rearveiw mirrior, with enough space for the sensor to see out the rear window as well. Looks very clean. I ran a wire through the wire cover thats already on the windshield covering the cables already going to the mirror. Then pushed the wire in the plastic molding around the front window down to the driver's side. I then fished it through to the fuse box with a coat hanger. Then splice in an inline fuse and wrap the hot end around one of the prongs on the accesory fuse and push it back it. Then connect the ground to a ground.

I see. I have a base model though. Are there any wires I can use there?

mine is mounted next to the rear view.. just to the left of the dot matrix.. it works great there.. the wire runs up into the headliner.. down the left pillar.. under the dash.. and is connected to an accessory wire. (turns on when car starts)

i would not pay an installer to do this..100$ is way out of line .. the whole procedure takes about 10 minutes

i would do it for 20$ for you

Your not using any of the wires....just the cover that is located there to hide the wires...

If the little slide cover isn't there on the base model...just push the wire into the trim...it just won't be covered where it comes out of the roof into the detector.

thats the best thing about the '04 opposed to the '03...the '04s have that extra outlet beneath the cupholder on the passenger side. makes it easier for the wiring not to be all over the place for a radar detector etc.

I made my own bracket cast about $.25 and it hangs under the mirror and then wired it to the fuse box. I tapped into the side mirror fuse.

Well, I did it myself. I wasn't sure about running wires from the mirror, so I have a wire running from the +12 and ground from my stereo snaked up and out of one of the vents in the top. Very slick. I'll post pix if anyone wants them.
