recommend a head unit?
I want to get a touch screen dvd type head unit for my Z.
I have one in my wifes car but it lacks a few things I want and it came in the car used so I dont know much about it.
They change all the time so I figured I would ask here as to what you all might recommend that is currently available and popular.
I want a touch screen that will do hands free blu tooth phone, mp3, cd's, sat radio I have (Sirius lifetime sub before the merge),dvd's.
I also want my android phone/tablets, to integrate into the system for my music, pics, vids, and apps.
I would get a second screen only to run off of the head unit for dvd's, rear view cam, and other things or to be able to use my phone through the screen and use the android apps like maps for nav etc.. on the screen.
I dont have the nissan nav in the car so I have that cubby to use the second screen.
I have the Pioneer avxxx I forget in my wife's Tiburon and it is pretty nice, but to do the sat radio or blu tooth I still have to buy more components and each one is a couple hundred bucks, I would like to get a new unit with everything I need built in, then install it myself with the appropriate harness.
I do most of my own stuff but I havent installed a head unit in years, I am sure it is pretty self explanatory and with the right harness hopefully would be nearly plug and play unless I had to run a back up cam, or other wiring.
If I am wrong let me know that too, lol I will gladly bring it to a specialist and have it done if it is beyond my abilities.
What is out there for under $1k that might be what I am looking for?
Thanks in advance for any info.

I prefer women as head units! Zing!
Um anything pioneer or kenwood.
Each have pros and cons
I have a dnx7100 which is a dinosaur nowadays but I've always been happy with it. I'd like try a pioneer app radio, it seems a little gimmicky but I'd rather have features I didn't use than want them and not have them.

Nice, thanks guys.
App radio? sounds like smart tv you mean, where a bunch of apps are built in?
Ok, I def would love to find an android friendly head unit, I love to integrate.
I will take a closer look at the current Pioneer line up I guess, they seem to be the popular name, my wife's is a Pioneer, etc..
I too would rather have some stuff I dont need or use and be able to do anything I want, than the other way around, I dont plan to do the speakers, I am not looking for ultimate sound, just great functionality and decent sound.

I am using a Pioneer AVHX4600BT, was only 300$ from amazon
Features
-AppRadio -> I can use a bunch of iphones apps and steam them to my headunit, I use Waze/ dashcommand/ escortpolicemap /
-Bluetooth
-Pandora
-DVD player
-Navigation* - have to purchase a $40 iphone cable -> can stream any iphone nav app to the headunit,
-Rear view camera* $20
-ASWC1 steering wheel control module - $40
All said and done is under $400 delivered to my door with all the harnesses.
to recap; I now have a headunit that I can control with my oem steering controls, looks good, plays DVD's, has a backup cam, streams GPS from iphone (Waze), and has a nightvision IR backup camera that I can toggle on demand.
-I also did DVD bypass so I can watch movies while I drive (well the passenger can) / can also toggle rear view camera on demand - to see who is tailgating me or make a lane change in heavy traffic without using side mirrors.

Nice thats a cool set up.
I was looking at some kenwoods, I like the dx890 and dx990 a little pricey but full of functionality and stuff I like.
I didnt realize Best buy sells and installs them, I am going to go to my best buy and spend a lot of time with a salesperson until I figure out what exactly I can get to best fit my needs.
350 yours is sweet, only thing missing for me is sat radio and if I had to they sell an adapter called the snap I think and I can always get one of those to add it to any radio, but I would rather have it all built in, I am sure there is a unit that does everything I want plus some things I am not even aware I want.
Thanks again for all the info you guys, I really appreciate it.

I had to do a little bit of a trim to make the kit fit perfectly flush, I used a soldering iron to melt off the little ear pieces of the dash face (with them on there is a 1" gap on the bottom), play around with it for a bit and you will see.
-Also reuse your stock metal headunit brackets but don't use the black plastic spacers that come with the pioneer .
I used this video as a tutoril to do the DVD/ navigation bypass
- make sure you buy the universal nissan harness so you don't have to cut and solder your oem harness.
-if you are using ASWC1 some soldering will be required.
Post up here or pm me if you get stuck or need some clarification
Overall it was a fairly simple install, this was my first ever deck install and it went great.
-make sure everything is soldered and heat shrinked for maximum longevity!

If you got a touring/enth make sure you get steering control module.
I had Kenwood units for decades and finally had enough of their horrible customer service. I got an Appradio3, the apps are in your smartphone (I have an iPhone5) it works & sounds great.
Thanks so much, you are giving me lots to think about .
I landd on three.'
First I Was set to get the kenwood 990, its 1500$ but bascially does everything and tons more, and is wifi, I like that but then I realized I can get the 8901 and it is nearly the same minus the nav.
I dont care about Nav as anyone knows that your basic cell phone maps, google maps is more precise and more informative than a stand alone due to the sat triangulation and faster updates strategy they use.
These kenwoods let me use my phone in many ways including putting its screen on the touchscreen, albeit I have to control it from the phone, I can open google maps lets say and use it as I do now for nav on my 7" screen.
Now, I want a second screen so while I am playing with my phone on one screen my passenger can watch a movie, a youtube vid, look up something online, etc.. plug in my laptop or tablet, or other usb devices, etc..
So I can get one for around $500, 1/3 the dnn990.
I need to go to the store, see them in person and pick the brain of a few installers to see what I am missing.
with any I need to get the sirius adapter, they offer a back up color and infrared camera, plus hands free phone and a connection to use my steering wheel controls too.
Now I need to go see how much am I giving up from one to the other, because although I dont need nav built in, I do like the apps, the wifi etc.. so I am still way off from making a decision but I know a lot more about what some units can do and what I Want.
I am thinking for $300 I could probably get a nice pioneer and be done, but I figure I want to do this once, I want to get as much out of it as possible and make my car all integrated and state of the art when it comes to electronic abilities so I will do more homework and figure it out.
I dont mind spending more if it will do more and allow me headroom to grow.
I will buy a set up next month after 5/15 when I free up more funds so stay tuned and I will let you know what I land on.
Keep posting any info of systems you guys use and let me see what you have, that is really the most helpful way as I can see them in action and hear from you guys things I might not consider or may forget about.
Thanks again for all your helps guys, awesome to have so much input.

I'd rather spend 300 on a pioneer and use the rest to get some nice gripy tires for the summer or a good sounding exhaust system.
I have this headunit. I can't really comment on it as I am in the process of installing a completely new setup in my car and the headunit will be the last thing I install. I did review it before I bought it on youtube and it seems to be pretty good for the money. The guy on youtube I think is the same seller on ebay that I bought it from. He has the cheapest price I could find online and also has "make an offer." I got it for $490 and the day I bought it they were doing quadruple ebay bucks and I got around $40 or $50 in ebay bucks too!

Yeah I really dont know now, I have been going back and forth, I want to find a pioneer or kenwood without built in nav but everything else.
there really not that expensive $400 or so plus a few adapters.
It needs to have usb android app integration so I can use my apps on it, dvd, cds, mp3, and I would like to run a second dvd screen off of it to the nav cubby in the z and be able to use the two screens independently of eachother but I am being told I might have to get a tablet for there, I have a 7" tablet I could mount there but I know I saw someone set up a dual monitor set up where he could use the two screens, so say my passenger can watch a movie but I can clone my phone app for maps, or youtube, or a call, etc..
I am not in a rush to get one, I want to make sure I find exactly what I am looking for and know it will integrate for me.
I sold some things today to put the cash toward my head unit so now I just need to keep reading and going out and looking at whats out there.
'Its confusing, I dont want to spend a lot, I will if what I want ends up being expensive but I am thinking I would be happy with what I have seen for $300, but I will have to add a backup camera 99, a sat radio adapter 90., an over ride harness 15$ etc.. but still if I can get android integration, and everything but nav and be able to run a second screen I would be happy with that.
A second screen is around 90$ and I think I can run it off the aux or usb out of the back of most of the head units I have been reading about.
I was at best buy today but they dont know anything the installer was way to busy to talk to anyone and they dont even carry the latest pioneer or kenwood stuff its like last years stuff is still out.
I am going to see about going to a place that installs them full time and see if I can talk to someone there.
If I am just doing a head unit and maybe a backup camera I should be able to handle a head unit right?
I mean I wouldnt think I have to solder anything if I buy the right harness, or am I way off on that?

350zsun, I am a bit of a tech geek, I really like techy stuff, and in my cars and bikes, I like to integrate as much as I can without getting ridiculous.
Its all part of making the interior a joy to be in every time I drive the car, as if it isnt already.

As far as soldering - You won't have to solder your harness coming out of the car, but you will have to solder the adapter to the headunit harness, which is really a joke because all you do is color match all the wires and solder them together/ wrap them up.
I had to solder the stock harness that has steering wheel controls because I got the ASWC1, which basically required to tap in to the oem harness, so I went ahead and soldered it in.
Find a good reputable shop and from what you've said I think you can get a nice headunit that does all you want it to do for 600 out the door installed.
