Default alarm question

i get this feeling like the factory alarm system does not work in my car...after i lock the doors and all i kicked the tire and nothing happened. i gave it a nice hit too. in my old car the alarm would go off...also after locking the door,i opened the door my inserting the key,and opening the door, nothing happened.

whats up with that?

Maybe in a high end vehicle, but I've never heard of a factory alarm having a shock sensor. I also thought that the so called alarm was disabled by using the key to unlock the doors.

I think the only thing it's good for is when any of the doors or hatch were opened without the key. I don't even think towing the car would cause the alarm to go off (assuming doors are not slim jim'ed open).

And a broken window won't sound the alarm.

Try this, roll down all the windows, arm the alarm. Reach in, unlock the door, and open the door. Does the alarm go off?

Maybe I'm all wrong about this and someone else can confirm/deny.

What car did you have before that had a factory alarm with shock sensor? Are you certain it was a factory alarm in it? Where you the original owner of your last car.

yup Z_Coaster, your correct. alarm is only for door/hatch/hood opening. Unlocking the door disarm it. this is a simple case of RTFM

damn nissan...the only reason i went with their alarm/etching all that was beacause if i got an aftermarket one it would void the warranty. i had an avenger before and it had an aftermarket alarm.

How does adding an aftermarket alarm void your warranty?

It doesn't. Unless he means it voids the warranty on the OEM alarm itself?

Not sure what you mean by "went with their alarm." The "security" system is standard on the Z.

One of the first things I had done to my baby was a new alarm.

Passive alarm is what the stock system is. you have to press a button to arm it, theres not shock sensors, and no door lock when starting the car. It only goes off if doors are opened. You have just been taken for a ride from that dealership. Etching is really a bad idea in general. Thats just advertising to thieves what model alarm you have so they can just look it up on the net to disarm it.

Yeah, doc bonz, I know that it doesn't void any warranty, but I just wanted to hear what the dealership told ny350z. I think they told him that it'll void the warranty so they can milk him for putting money down on an alarm system that's already stock.

Probably not much you can do about it at this point. A lot of dealers have their so-called "Protection Packages" where they charge you hundreds of dollars for them to take a diamond tip pen and scratch your VIN all over your car. For the most part, this is worthless and won't deter any thief.

The passive alarm on the Z is OEM and ALL Z's have it. It isn't anything that your dealer added on. If they implied that they did, they were being dishonest with you.

You may get some satisfaction from chewing them out and maybe even calling the BBB but they probably won't give you any $ back.

BTW, what is "RTFM"???

The factory alarm doesn't have a 'valet' mode. They must have installed an aftermarket system. Can you take a pic of your keyfob and post it here? Or even a really good discription?

I think you are getting your terminology mixed up. If it was installed at your dealership, it isn't "factory". That would mean that it was installed at the Nissan plant in Japan.

There are factory installed options (like the side impact airbags for example), there are port installed options (like the Track model rear wing spoiler which are installed at the US port in Newport News, VA in my car's case), and there are dealer installed options that are put on/in the car at your dealership.

I don't know for sure about the 04, but as far as I know, there was no dealer installed option for an upgraded alarm system on the 03. If the dealer installed it, then they basically sold you an aftermarket alarm system which I'm sure they marked up tremendously to pad their profit margin on the sale of the car.

Why do you need pictures? How hard is it to walk down to your car, open the door, and look at the "keypad" thing you mentioned and read the name off of that?

Either way, you probably got a $99.00 alarm system and some VIN etching for $600.00

Never trust a dealer when it comes to things like this.
