Default JL Audio 8w7

Has anyone heard one yet? I know the w7 series is the top notch JL series but before I drop the $400 bones on the sub I would like some feedback on it. I was told that the single 8w7 being pushed by a JL 500/1 amp would be louder than 2 JL 10w3v2's. If this is true then going with the single 8 seem's smarter sue to the smaller cone which would produce tighter and more crisp base. But the whole concept of one 8" sub out doing two 10's has me in a bunch. If anyone has heard the 8w7 please tell me what you think about it!!!!

I have a 10W7, and while it's impressive, it is not louder than 2 12's. Making bass means moving air, and the more air you move, the more bass you make, so it follows that a sub with high excursion (Assuming the same cone area) will be louder than one with average excursion.

This was one of the limitations that JL was working with when they made the W7 series. By moving the surround to the outside of the basket, they free up a lot of wasted space that they can then use to keep the moving diameter high.

So then, it follows that you can take cone area (Sd) and multiply it times excursion (xmax) and it should give you roughly the size of the column of air displaced by the cone. I believe JL gives one way xmax measurements, but it shouldn't matter since we're comparing JL to JL (should both be one-way measurements).

#1: JL 10W3v2-D4:
Sd: 53.5 in^2.
Xmax: .579 in.

53.5 in^2 * .579 in = 30.9765 cu. in.

#2. JL 8W7-3
Sd: 38.0 in^2
Xmax: .75 in.

38.0 in^2 * .75 in = 28.5 cu.in.

You'll note that the 8W7 moves a lot of air, but not quite as much as 2 10w3s. I would think, in a case like this, there are other factors involved, such as: power requirement, box size, weight, etc. As for power, each speaker is recommended to have 300 watts, so with the 8W7, you should have around 300 watts, and with the 10w3s, 600 or more.

In truth, I'd just get the 10w7 and a 500/1 amp. It's more than adequate and is theoretically louder (based on calculations like my previous post) than the w3s. You can get the 10w7 for cheaper than $400 too (not counting installation).

I got mine for $350 at the good guys. Just tell them to price match a car stereo shop or you're walking.
