Default EQ to help MP3 audio?

Well, I'm a little disappointed in the sound of my system with MP3s (I know it's lossy and will never sound as good as the original, but it's the most convenient).

I've noticed that mp3s on my old system sounded better (with same exact equipment except for now I have MB Quart PCEs as opposed to the lower RCEs). But back then, I'd convert to WAV before burning, and winamp would apply it's EQ to it, which when I listen to it on the computer makes a world of difference. Now I just have the MP3 player and so there's no equalization.

Does anyone think adding a cheap EQ to my system would make a large difference? And if so, can you recommend a good entry level ($100 or so) that would do the job?

Thanks.

I have an Alpine 11 band EQ (half din, BBE, sub output.) if you are interested. $75 plus shipping. Paid $215 for it.

True, but only particially. The MP3 codec can be lossy, but does not have to be. For example, rips at 128bits/sec and 44.1 Khz are very lossy. However, I rip a different way.

Set your rips to Variable Bit Rate (VBR) and quality at "Highest". The files will be much larger, but the quality will be the same as the source (presuming CD audio). Don't get me wrong, some will notice a *slight* difference, but it takes a very trained ear. This has to do more with the type of music and the codec in use and not necessarily the quality.

Since I use my iPod, I can afford larger and better rips. Don't be concerned about MB size. Just rip for the best quality. Oh, and don't download bad rips either. If you do have to download, search for only high quality rips. You will be much happier in the end.

As for the EQ, you may need it. However, I have found that my rips and my iPod do just fine without a EQ. Just need a little bass/trebble adjustment now and then.
