Default Head unit or factory speakers?

I have a Touring with the Bose system and I was wondering if the Head unit or the factory speakers was the cause of the sub par sound? CD's seem to be descent but when you turn it on to FM it sounds terrible or at least to me. I may end up replacing the whole system, but if a head unit( better highs) and a new sub would do the trick I might try it.
Thanks Mike

No sense just replacing one or the other, just do it all and get it over with...be happy.

If you replace just the speakers they will not have enough power to perform well. If you replace just the head unit the stock speakers will be over powered and if you listen to music loud at all you will blow the speakers soon (I did).

as rushguy said best bet is to just replace the head unit and speakers and get all the work out of the way. neither upgrade works very well without the other. Though if you had to pick one to do first I'd say replace the headunit first. Then when you hear a speaker pop you have a good excuse to replace the speakers.

oh...or another option would be to change the speakers and get an amp for them. then you dont have to change the head unit.
but if you were looking to save money that option wouldn't really help much.

i'm in the same boat. I think I'll upgrade the head unit first, and then the speakers.

I'm going to do a head unit first so I can get XM and have a EQ. I will however replace the speakers as one has already bit the dust, so I guess it'll be a total replacement.
