Comments on JL audio 13w7 and RF1501bd
I'm currently shopping around for a new system for the z and i'm currently considering the jl 13w7 powered by rockford fosgates 1500watt mono amp (1501bd). Anyone have any experience with either of them? Also my local shop told me the 13w7 can be used as a free air sub. Is this true?
In terms of install i'm considering removing the spare and placing the sub box there, with the cone of the sub facing downwards. I think i saw a member here have a similar setup (cant recall member name and search seems to be down for me). I'm a real noob in the car audio scene and your comments are appreciated. Thanx in advance!

the W7 is definitely not meant for open air use. don't know what your shop is thinking.
other than that i have heard quite a few cars with W7's and they are very powerful and sound very nice. however they do cost a pretty penny and there are other brands that can deliver equal output with a smaller price. i would think the Image Dynamic Max's and the Adire Audio Brahmas are easily comparable if not even better than the JL's.
though i wont knock JL in anyway, after all I am using JL's.

Wrong... The W7 sounds almost twice as loud in a vented enclosure, only caveat is the almost twice as big of a box you'll need to tune it correctly.

I think blue dream meant used as a free-air sub, as in no enclosure for the sub at all.
Yes it can be used in a vented (aka ported) enclosure, or a sealed enclosure.
And narkotic is correct that in a ported enclosure it will be much more powerful, but require a much larger enclosure. Specs for enclosure size can be found at the JL website,
JL AUDIO
And to your question, I'm not sure how inverting subs goes as far as the way it is enclosed. You should send a PM to that member to get better information for the setup.

you cant fire a W7 sub inverted because of its special way of sealing the sub to its enclosure. JL have its special 12 or 13 screws that have to be inserted in the front to protect it. ALthough you can find a way of doing it it would be useless and unpracticle becuase it would be almost impossible unless your destroying your box to get the sub out incase you have to replace a part or driver. More info can be found at www.jlaudio.com under driver spec section of the W7.

and RFosgate amp unless going to its High end models are not really good. The RF only produces 1500 watts at a higher voltage like 14 when a car usually pushes out 11-12 volts. I would get a Pheonix Gold, PPI, or a JL 1000/1 to power that big boy.
