Default sub box shape?

Does it matter, what shape a sub enclosure has? From what I read with the mods here, it doesn't .. .all that seems to count is how many liters of volume, no matter how complex the shape. The reason I ask is, because I wonder how free you are with putting the sub in various odd shaped corners of the car (like the mods seen for the trunk rear left and right sides). Also, what about vibration with fiberglass custom boxes? I see people making thick walled 1" MDF boxes ... fibre is hardly that thick in most cases. Any problems with this? Reason to ask is, that fibre is of course alot easier to mold into a specific shape (rear sides again).

You typically don't want the front of the box to be parrallel with the back (in order to cancel out standing waves within the box). It is also not about thickness of the box: it is about strenghth. 1" MDf is great: but if you are doing custom fiberglass, odds are you are doing against metal in the car anyway, so that shouldn't flex as much as a free-standing box would.

I am doing the top of my box in 3/4" MDF and the rest fiberglass, and I'll be doing enough layers to make sure it doesn't flex much at all.

Ok I see. I wondered about the standard lcoation of the sub (behind driver). From the size of the compartiment behind and the non-sealedness, I assume without mods, you'd need a Free Air sub .. I want to avoid that, though. I thought of somehow putting an MDF box there. I wonder if anyone did that. Most mods I saw are in the trunk area. I'd want to put a 10" single sub, sleaed, in that area, without having to seal off the area behind the sub (i.e. putting dynamat in there and then seal the holes with something .... sounds nasty :P). Anyone did something like that?

Yup, I put my sub in the stock sub spot behind driver's seat. I molded the bottom of that area with Fiberglass and finished the rest with 3/4 MDF, for my 10" sub. With the fiberglass molded bottom, it sits in the area perfectly. It also gave me the required space need for internal volume (since the bottom increase as it goes towards the back.

The search still down, but I have lots of pics posted which shows the fiberglass bottom, the mdf top half and whole setup inside the sub area.

I am doing a sub next to the spare tire so that I have somewhere to mount my amps. also, I've heard more than a few people say that having the sub in the middle of the car sucks qualitywise. If you're going to do fiberglass anyway, might as well stick the sub in the back where the piece of foam is-it's easier to to something out of fiberglass back there rather than in the stock location, and won't block access to anything (my amp rack will be easily removeable for service)

Getting enough volume and a good sealed rigid enclosure is problematic in the stock location. Getting good bass response really requires good sealing, and the right volume to get the proper tuned air suspension. Yes you can do it in the stock location, but dealing with the irregular shapes, access to the fuel system components, mounting onto the stock plate all require substantial effort. You might want to consider using a good 8" sub, I used a JL 8", simple rectangular pine box mounted to the stock removable plate. Plently of bass, removable, and easy. But then again, I'm not into rap!
