Who makes the factory Nav system?

Who makes the factory Nav system?
I know some people aren't happy with the Nav coverage depending on where you live but what I was wondering is if the Zenrin discs are the only ones that are compatible? Then again this could be like trying to use a Xbox disc in a PS2.
