Default Alpine CDA-7998 $399 @ Cruthfield

I thought I'd let you guys know that www.Cruthfield.com has the Alpine CDA-7998 on sale for $399. I don't know why but that's 50% off the original price of $799. If anyone is in the market for a headunit, this is a steal.

Holy moly! That is a good deal. I Paid 650 for mine and thought I was getting a good deal.

Anyone have experience with this HU? I guess it fits fine in our cars? So the face plate folds into the unit like one of those LCD screens? Does it look safe to leave if I park in a city (Boston)? I am considering it because alpine is supposedly releasing an ipod add on later this summer which may be usable with the AI-net HU's.

Any comments on this unit overall? If its that good a deal I may jump on it. I was going to go with external amps anyway. now I need to pick those out and figure out where to install them!!!

I've had mine for over a year now and love it. This by far is one of the most flexible customizable HU I've ever seen. The ability to handle crossover, digital eq, time correction from the head unit vs. amps and additional hardware is awesome. Plus the bio-display on this model rocks. It installed just fine in my car using the Metra dash kit. As for pics, you might search this forum...I posted pics when I installed it a year ago plus I know several guys on this forum have that HU. I paid $560 for mine, so $400 for this thing is a steal. Keep in mind its a dead head (no internal amplification) so you will HAVE to have seperate amps to power your speakers. I currently use the AI-Net input using an adapter to RCA for feeding my Auto PC sound into the head unit.

Thanks! Great to hear you like the unit. I actually just bought it after I posted my questions. I figured they have free returns for 30 days so what the heck! Got another $20 off through master card too (search fatwallet) I do not know which dash kit Crutchfield is sending with this thing so I hope it is not an issue. Now I gotta figure out where to place my amps! I still have to get a sub (for stock location), and amps. I got Kenwood eXcelon's for the doors and back. Can't wait till this thing is done!

I don't have pictures yet.

Still waiting to get 10w7 installed, and growing impatient.

oooo, where you installing the 10w7? I'm in the process of updating my amp/sub setup and would like to check that out once you get it set up.

It will go under the strut tower bar.

There is an amp rack that spans the gap between the strut bar and the hump behind the seats. It's got a 'speaker grille' on it so that you can remove it to show the amps or cover them up.

Nice...thats one idea I've pondered as well. I'm local so let me know when you have it done. I'd love to check it out.

OK. May take a couple days to get everyting posted.

I've never posted pics here. Do we get any space here for pics, or do we have to use other hosts?

You can post pics here they just have to be less than 200k images and there is a delay in posting one right after the other...I think you have to wait like 30 seconds between each post.

This might be a dead subject but one of the features I like about the 7998 is its ability to change its button colors to match the 350. Here's a picture of my dash at night.

Things that annoyed me with the 7998:

With a display as big as the 7998, you would think they could display the time and station simultaneously

With all of the buttons on the face of it (1 through 9, # and *) you would think they would let you program radio stations pre-sets for those buttons. You can only program buttons 1-6.

I know this sounds really picky but I have to complain about something.
