Things that annoyed me with the 7998:
With a display as big as the 7998, you would think they could display the time and station simultaneously
With all of the buttons on the face of it (1 through 9, # and *) you would think they would let you program radio stations pre-sets for those buttons. You can only program buttons 1-6.
I know this sounds really picky but I have to complain about something.

Any word if this may support the new iPod add on box which alpine is releasing? I have a 3rd gen iPod and was hoping to be able to add this feature later. Since the 7998 was released back in 2002 I was a bit concerned it may not work. In that case I guess line-in will have to do.

I ordered mine yesterday and already have here in my hands Now the question I have is who do I have to kill to get the XM tuner box?? There are a few on ebay, but that is pretty much it. For now I can use the FM modulator like I am now, but I was hoping that I could give that to my wife and work right from the HU. Does everything I need (cable to link it to the HU) come with the tuner?
TIA

That's another thing that sucks about the 7998......no XM tuner available right now.
A third party manufacture is in the progress of making a compatable tuner that will work on Alpine's Ai-NET. There are some threads about that on this site.
You will need a Ai-NET cable when that tuner comes on the market since the 7998 doesn't come with one.

I guess Crutchfield finally put some info about this new replacement. It looks like a good deal at $99. Here's the link to it:

Well, good news and bad news. I talked with the Terk support rep and the module XM XMDALP100 (Smart Digital Adapter) should be here in July. Crutchfield has it listed for $49.99. THIS IS IN ADDITION TO the universal XM tuner ($99) that is not going to be out until August. BUT and there is a but, the tuner box from the Commander (out in stores now for around $130) will work with the Smart Digital Adapter just fine because it is the same thing. Just thought I would share the info and time line.
Thanks to all that aided in getting the info.
