Passport 8500 owners wanting to upgrade to X50: read this

The POP update will not increase the range or sensitivity of the original Passport 8500 and the original Passport 8500 red display can not be changed to a blue display.

$80 for an incremental upgrade. I may just take my chances later by selling the 8500 on eBay and buying a new X50 outright.

The update is supposed to make the unit better at detecting POP radar, which is a new form of instant-on that's gaining popularity across the country and does give current radar detectors some trouble.

However, speedzones.com did a test using POP radar and the current 8500 already detects Ka-POP and K-POP (surprisingly, the V-1 did not detect Ka-POP). My guess is the update improves on the sensitivity of this radar band.
