Default Passport 8500 owners wanting to upgrade to X50: read this

Found on the Escort website:

Can I get the new features of the Passport 8500 X50 added to my original Passport 8500?

We will have a POP update available for the original Passport 8500 by the end of this year. We estimate the cost of the POP update will be $79.95 for detectors that are not covered by the Escort Extended Service Plan. Although POP radar is not widely used and is not a major threat at this time, the POP update will allow original Passport 8500 owners to have the selectable POP feature of the Passport 8500 X50 added to their detector. The POP update will not increase the range or sensitivity of the original Passport 8500 and the original Passport 8500 red display can not be changed to a blue display.
$80 for an incremental upgrade. I may just take my chances later by selling the 8500 on eBay and buying a new X50 outright.

The update is supposed to make the unit better at detecting POP radar, which is a new form of instant-on that's gaining popularity across the country and does give current radar detectors some trouble.

However, speedzones.com did a test using POP radar and the current 8500 already detects Ka-POP and K-POP (surprisingly, the V-1 did not detect Ka-POP). My guess is the update improves on the sensitivity of this radar band.
