Well, since this was my first install, and my friend was out of practice, it took us around 21 hrs on this install. List of what we did:
Install: Pioneer AVIC N1, Infinity Kappa 62.5i front, 6002i rear, basslink and Escort ZR3.
it was a long process that ended at 5 am today, still don't have the amp in cause got messed around by an ebay seller, but am getting a JL 300/4 here on friday and installed this weekend.
I did want to thank a few people for all their help, couldn't have done it without the help:
frankmusic-explained a lot and was very patient with all the questions
zonester-I'm still bugging him with questions, but he's always really helpful
andyb-great advice
toykilla-more great advice on the install and awesome write up that made the install a lot easier
Scafremon for his great write up
jcn30127-zr3 install advice
Thanks a lot to everyone

ok, one problem I have is with the dash kit. I bought a scosche kit and the avic sits out very far. is there a way to fix this with another kit or the factory brackets perhaps?
here are the pics

Didn't want to rip panels over and over, so yeah, we did it all at once. Thought it was better that way. What do you have planned for yours?

I'm not sure, but I think it's the Scosche dash kit I bought....any suggestions? Is there a way to mount it using the stock brackets that will make it sit further in?

I already replaced rears with pionner 4 way 6 3/4 inch coaxials. (did those first because I could barely hear them, they were like 32 ohm !!!!!!!!!!!!)
I will soon replace the fronts with 6 1/2 s.
I want a double DIN head unit... I really like the Kenwood... I am going to wait until there is some more competition available from other manfaturers for a double din unit. I would love to get one from sony with memory stick slot ! Or from pioneer with the engine stats without nav. Obviously the Avic N1 is flip up, but something similar in double din would be great. I waited a long time for the z to return. I can wait a while for some more HU choices.

As for your installation, you should be able to bolt the HU directly into factory mounting holes without any aftermarket bracket. All you really need is some sort of trim ring to finish off with a clean look.

Take it apart and remount it, use the kit but mount the headunit to the factory brackets. There are holes on the side of the AVIC and most head units. Use the factory screws, don't worry they shouldn't be that long to harm the inside of the unit.
