I am planning to hardwire my 8500x50 - I have the hardwire kit which is fused.

I am planning to hardwire it to the cigarette lighter fuse - I believe this is fuse #7? One side of the fuse is obviously not-fused (directly connected to batter) and the other is fused. Since the fuses are orientated vertically - which end is the fused end - top or bottom?

Wiring to the fused end would be safer I think but with the hardwire kit (fused already) it may not matter...?

I don't think it matters. As you said, it already has it's own fuse so all you are doing is getting power to it. I have mine on the Cig. ligher fuse and I have never really paid any attention to which side of the fuse I m hooked up to.

 

I see that you have the "Tour". Why not get the "custom" 8500 X50 "Radar Mirror Mount" from Mike? Get your power source and ground from the back of your mirror, shorten the cable on the "hardware kit" and don't worry about the fuze. Custom mount can be obtained by sending an e-mail to: mike3348@adelphia.net

 

I already ordered the mirror mount from Mike. I am just more comfortable running a wire to the fuse box than I am cracking into the mirror wires.

What if you are not using the hardwire kit and you cut the cigarette lighter part that powers the unit and you wired and crimped your own power cord. Then wired it to the fuse box. Would I then have to worry about side (top or bottom) to connect the wire to? I have it up and running on the cigarette lighter fuse but all the sudden my Compustar alarm is no longer audible. It works but I have no flashing lights or audible beeps.
