Default Subwoofer space behind seat.

After looking at lots of installs... I have been thinking about trying to fit my ed12A 12" behind the seat. I would have to make a custom wooden fram to bolt to the car, but thats no problem.

But.. what about sealing? How much sealing would I need to do? How much air space is back there? How much is a new plastic cover (bose)...

Thanks all!

Also, this is a hefty sub.. and Ill be running around 1000 watts RMS... any weak links in that compartment? I doubt the Bose can handle that sort of power so I am not sure how structurally sound it is...

Unless eD started making free air 12As recently your going to need an entire enclosure made not just the frame. That is not a sealed compartment by any stretch of the imagination. The Bose sub is firing into a free air style area. No sealing or sound proofing.

Crud.. thats what I though... no chance of sealing it up? What about with expanding foam?

Ugh, I hate the thought of using that stuff in my car...

If you plan on pushing that kind of power you will definetly want to reconsider what you are thinking (or at least your plan of attack). Unless you seriously reinforce that area (both for structural and sealing purposes) you will have some serious issues. I'm considering doing the same thing as you (except with an IDMax 10) and it's going to take some glasswork to pull it off.

crud....

The wife hates the FG box idea, and I am kind of turned off by it myself... a LOT of work and money, and people would be much more inclined to steal it... plus I really would like to keep that trunk space,

Her suggestion was that I got with a 10" (ed10Kv2 or IDQ 10) and run a 5 channel amp. That would sound good and be a very clean install. Heck it would pound some, but not nearly as much as the 12A with my Hifonics Zeus 1000D.

Crud... crud crud crud, the 5channel amp on ebay is up in like 2 hours so I need to make a decision....

I'm actually going to try to build a fiberglass box that is glassed to the factory sub bracket. I want the whole setup to be removable just unbolt the stock sub plate, and the whole enclosure lifts out (not sure if this makes sense). I have a feeling I'm not going to be able to use the IDMax though as the motor structure is too large....we'll see soon enough.

but what about the internals? I was going to replace the 10" bracket with a custom 3/4" MDF cutout... that would hold it... but I just wasnt sure how the insides of the compartment would work.. maybe if I dynamatted the snot out of them...

Yeah, you also have to consider that if you 'seal' off that compartment, you may need to get back in there to do some maintenance later. The access for the fuel pump is at the bottom of that and the seat belts bolt up to the sides of the compartment. So, sealing it in such a way as to make it accessible in the future is not an easy proposition. Just curious, have you looked in the back of the hatch? To the left of the spare, under the false floor is this huge chunk of foam about 10 inches or so deep and pretty big volumetrically. If building a fiberglass enclosure, maybe consider building a woofer into that space firing up? Think best you could do is a 10-incher and it would have to be round. I abandoned that idea when I got my S10L7 square jobbie. Just a thought... There's another thread here from a guy that built a sub box for a 12 that was totally removable using the stock sub bracket as a mounting plate for the enclosure. Have a look in search, his idea was really cool. Good luck with whatever you choose!

My wife and I are going to so some brain storming and measuring this weekend....

but it should sound plenty nice

Kenwood MP919 MP3 player

Hifonics Zeus ZX6400
Crystal CsX 602s front and rear
0Guage Stinger wire split to 4Guage each amp and Stinger 1f cap.
Stinger Hyper series 6 channel RCA

I am very excited to do the install and will take as many pics as I can. I just need to figure out HOW I want it done...

Yeah install wise the Z is a *****. I played with several idea as I wanted my enclosure to be easily removable for tracking and I wanted to keep my spare for day to day driving but I wanted to keep my two JL 12s and they only thing i came up with was my current enclosure. It looks huge and takes up a bunch of trunk space but it can be easily removed by pulling a couple tabs and removing the source wire. Heres a pic...

MIA thats not a bad design... add some handle and it should remove easily... it would certainly be easier to make than what I am trying now....

any install pics?

We made a sealed FG enclosure behind the drivers seat. We tossed the stock aluminum BOSE pancake sub holder after we molded the front of it. There is plenty of room to mount anything back there, I have 2 amps, power block, bat caps and a bunch of other crap. Just dont put any screws through the fuel cell, and you should be good.

Razo,

Where in So Cal are you. Do you mind me stopping for a look? I build a box (mdf) in the stock location in there, but still not satisfied.

I am in the Covina area.

I'm in Temecula, I don't mind, but we're not done. We still have some sanding to do, as well as a pull through grill.

Right now it is an Alpine 10 R, but I am already burning it up with my amp. I see a square Kicker going in there soon. I'll take some pics.
