Default Ps2 Mod chip

Im currently running a ps2 in my z and want to mod it to play "backup discs". My question is what is the best chip to buy, and do i need any kind of special software on my computer to make "backups" of the games I already purchased or can i just do a regular copy of the disk ? Thanks

I'd recommend one of the ones you just have to plug in. Ps2's are hands down the hardest of them all to mod because of their structure.

theirs a new thing called PS2 advance. essentially; you put a hard drive up to 120gb into it with a network adaptor. then you put the advance CD in; and you burn games and backups to the harddrive.

no game disks needed ever; just play them intirely off the hard drive.

my copy of PS2 advance is in the mail. no need to back up your copies; just go to blockbuster and use theirs.

ps2 advance or ps2 hd loader (same thing, i believe) can be found on ebay or some websites. the company that made it and was selling it was stopped because it means people don't have to buy the games.

it's just a boot cd. you have to buy the network adapter and a harddrive attaches to that and slides into the ps2. with the boot cd you can save games onto the hard drive and then load tha games straight from the hard drive.

the only drawback is some games will not work on it. there is a compatability list somewhere; I dont have the link. 99% of games do work; those that dont; just use the CD. I think if it can be "backed up" itll work.

the difference between loader and advance is advance will copy "backed up" games; and imports. loader required an original copy. they stopped making loader for advance.

got mine from
http://www.baysoftgames.com/hdloader.html
but it hasnt arrived yet; ordered a week ago; had to email for confirmation of its shipment. hopefully itll arrive; sources are dwindling.

also; it reduces load times by 2-4x and doesnt use the laser as much; hopefully making it last longer... as my second PS2 has going to crap.

this wont work in the new PStwo. that one has no HD slot.

for xbox you can just get a mod chip and upgrade the hard drive. then u can save all the games to the hard drive.

that sucks i didn't get the advace version. i could have got a whole bunch of imported games. do you think if i install a mod chip i'd be able to use imported games with the hd loader? ive had a mod chip for a while but i never installed it because i dont have a soldering iron in school.

the company recommends to use a sony hd because that's what they tested it with. if you buy the hd loader or advance the booklet that comes with it comes with a list of known compatible hard drives.

I heard maxtor was the drive to use. any hard drive could work; it seemed to be a matter of fitting, and WD and seagate were questionable; some fit some need to be modified to fit. maxtor and hitatchi were the 2 I saw that said 99.9% fit.

I personally have a 120gb maxtor. and it fits; but Im still lacking the program

I got the program (HD Loader) earlier this week. It rocks. The load times are great now. Take for instance GTA: Vice City. You know how you go from one part of the city to the next, and then they throw that splash screen. From there you have to wait for 20 seconds for the section to load. Well with HD Loader it only throws the splash screen up for less then a second and back you are to playing. I highly recommend this product.

I have the same drive as ares, a Maxtor 120GB. Got that for $75 at Fry's and also the Sony Ethernet adapter for $20 at the same place.

Games usually take about 30 minutes to transfer to your HD. I'm assuming it's because of the slow DVD-ROM drive they included in the PS2. I hear you can transfer games through your PC to your PS2 using an app called Winhiip but I think you need a USB cord in order to do this.

can you say how much it uses the cdrom in the PS2 to play a game off the hd? myPS2 is 98% dead. the laser sticks; you can tap it to make it move again; but to do it for the entire time of playing... no good. Im hoping/banking it loads the CD at the beginning and then thats it; hard drive alone. yes?
