Default Avic-Z1 installed - 2006 350z

just finished this on sunday, on a 2006 Bose 350z

AVIC-Z1
GEX-P10XMT XM NAV traffic
NBT-1 bluetooth

what a pain.

here are some notes on the project to help others out.

I used metra wire harness 70-7550 this wire harness had some wires in the wrong spot for the 06 bose, although it fits. you will have to adjust manually.

speed sensor wire that you have to tap is located on the middle grey AC control unit, it is the only sold white wire

parking brake wire - ground it.

reverse signal wire, dont need this if you are not doing the rear camera

Problem with no dash kit available for 2006 model, you do not need a dash kit with the AVIC-Z1, you have to modify the extra piece they give you with the Z1, mine looks pretty good. Save yourself 250.00 on the fabrication. I am going to replace it with the metra if they ever release it, but im not paying hundreds of dollars for a piece of plastic. There is some finesse needed to make this work, you can not just use it as is because the unit will not open to let you use a DVD. Took about 30 minutes to adjust it with some tools.

the system is the sweetest i have ever seen. also had time to hardwire my radar detector to my visor mount.

great forum, hope this helps someone.

Watch that parking brake grounding rather than running it across the parking brake. I've been told with the N2 and N3 that the gyroscope (really intertial sensors) will detect that the car is moving and shut off the front screen parking brake grounded or not. The N1 unit was easy to defeat this way.

Let us know if it works as I have not tried this.

you can use the flash your light on boot up trick to defeat lockouts, however if you do connect your parking brake in the correct manner , as soon as you use the parking brake lockouts are back. this is why i grounded mine.

its not 100% perfect because there is no dash kit used, but it hardly noticable and in a couple months when the release the kit you can make it perfect.

I installed an Avic Z1 in my 2003. I had some initial issues with the door not opening once installed using the Metra Kit (99-7402 I think) I had to drill additional holes 3/8 of an inch behind the stock holes to recess the unit deeper into the dash. I should have taken pictures but I didnt because I was to focused on getting it in my car after waiting for the unit itslf for 4 weeks. Im installing a new exhaust soon and I will snap a few photos of the finished install (But I am pretty tired of taking the dash board apart)
Its ok to connect the parking brake wire. If you want to bypass the no video while driving feature on the Z1 all you have to do is:
Start the car with the parking brake off and headlights off
As the system boots, turn your headlights on then off THREE TIMES, finishing in the off position
The Avic will then allow you to watch video while in motion.
I imagine this is a feature they allowed for setting up display units but I have verified that this works even though I only use it for setting destinations in the Navigation system while traveling.

As far as the nav traffic, it depends on the area you live in. I live way outside of Philly and there isnt any Nav traffic coverage untill I get closer to Philly. I think they have some bugs to work out and I cancelled the service yesterday in anger. I sat in a three hour traffic jam while looking at the screen displaying the "Traffic Flowing Freely" prompt on the Route Conditions screen. Untill they work out the kinks with the nav traffic, stay clear. Unless you live IN a major city.

i had the door not opening problem also, i needed to adjust the plastic frame piece (that comes with the Z1) further back so the door would open properly too.

If the new kit is anything like the one for for my 03 the original stock backets have to be modified, just keep that in mind when you go to install it. there is another thread that someone posted the pics of the holes that had to be drilled. If I can find the pic I will repost it.

I hate when people say "use the search feature", I would use it but I dont feel like wading through 15 pages of one thread to find one obscure reference.

Found it! The stock holes have to be modified becase the stock brackets attach directly to the dashboard piece you install the radio into.

This is not a Avic Z1 but the principle is the same

THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR PURCHASE OUTLETS. I hate when people announce how much they spent on something only to never say where....
Also, I would love to see some action shots with the Z1 in. I have an 06 and want a nicer head unit but not happy about the gaps. Also, I think I can swing $1600, crutchfield is jerking us around with that $2250 price tag. Tell us what you think about the nav function and thesound quality when you can! Thanks
