This is why I stopped the Audio upgrades after I traded my 03 Z in for my current ZR.
Over the last 10 years I have spents probably over $10K on stereos for about 3 cars. Let me tell you, everyone of them were either botched or just plain ****ed up! I only had one good install and that was in my Mazda Protege!
Anyway back to my Z, ****ing idiots drilled my radiator heater core inside my Z and never told me, next thing I know I am driving down the street with no COOLANT!
Then they rip everything up and I find out they spliced USED wires together.
This is when it dawned on me, to never allow installers to touch my car, there are simply too many IDIOT cheap a$$ no knowledge KIDS who do not know what the **** they are doing. All the business cares about is making $! And BTW, **** CAR TOYS, sorry mother****ers!
Hard lessoned learned!

Thats horrible. If your considering bringing your car to best buy for audio work, do yourslef a favor and bring it to the circuit city roadshop! statistically, circuit does about 3 times more car audio installs than bestbuy does. Over 2 million a year. I only know this because I work there.
A rule of thumb from installers: "Don't drill into anything unless you know whats behind it." Just common sense really.

keep in mind that not just best buy does this, but regular shops too...usually, the truth is this:
1. shop is only as good as the installer that works on the car that day
2. shops want to make money, so they dont want to pay as much
3. the guys who are willing to work on cars for less usually either have no skills, no experience, no common sense, or all of hte above...
hence now i do all the work myself

How about a paragraph or two?
This is pretty much the reason why I did all the work on my car myself. I worked car stereo installion for three years before enlisting in the Navy back in '81 and I never had an install go as bad as yours.
I did have a pilot drill snap on me and I spiraled a path down a Mustang's front quarter panel. Licensed, bonded, and insured my insurance covered the paint and my boss gave the guy the installation for free. We had connections with a custom van shop a couple miles down the road who did the painting with great results.
Stuff happens during an installation but drilling into gasoline tank is just not thinking ahead.

That is really awful, but try and look at the bright side.
At least it was BB that screwed up the install, a large company with lots of insurance. Had you have gone to a small shop they most likely would have fought this all the way, saying that you must have done that to the car after you picked it up.
Paul is right, ANY shop is only as good as the person working on your car. I wouldn't group all BB installers together because of one bad experiance with one installer.
Lessons learned here should be to qualify the person working on your car that day (it sounds like you did this though).
Also, NEVER let an installer cover something out of his own pocket. No shop will fire someone for their first mistake. If he feels he needs to cover it to save his job chances are he doesn't need to be working on cars.
In my 4+ years installing professionaly I never broke anything that I couldn't fix, besides a Mazda Miata radio trim piece (I later found out that Circuit City will not replace radios in that particular Miata because the trim piece always breaks).
Good luck with the repairs, and make sure they do you right!

The last time i took my car for a stero install they stole a connector. It was a independant shop, supposed to be the best in the area. My porsche had a blapunkt stero when i bought it. I had a newer one so i took it in with the connector. Turns out they are the same for both cd players. They kept one, i tried to get it back and they lied that it was put back in the box. Two days later i had to pull it back out and recrimp all the wires for the deck as they all fell off.
Now i do everything myself. Its easy to hide the wires in a z. A trick i have learned to drilling the trunk of a car is use really short screws for the amp. Just screw it into the carpet, it wont move.

I never thought of using velcro on the amp, but when you take the screws back out of the carpet you cant tell they have been there. The amp power wire was a pain. You have to poke a hole in that thick rubber under the battery and stick it through there. The RCA cables were a pain to slide through the little holes in the dash. I have a alpine headunit. Crossfire 12" and a 1200watt kenwood amp for now. I still need front and rear speakers.
