Default My fiberglass sub box build.

I have another thread in the Northwest section, so this may get deleted for double posting?

When I first started, I contoured the front and rear pieces to fit tightly against the plastics under the window panel. I ended up having to cut the box in half, just to get it out, then I fiberglassed it back together. I cut off the countered parts and the box ended up dropping right in. This is my first time doing a box out of fiberglass and my first box in at least 5 years. Thanks for looking. I think it turned out great.

The subs are 12" JL Audio W0s and are powered by a PhoenixGold 600.1 amp.

Well, I decided to paint it because I didn't want the look of carpet and I've never wrapped a box (or anything, for that matter) in vinyl or leather. That decision to paint cost me several days of sanding. Had I not taken that route and just carpeted, it probably would have taken half the time. All in all, it took me 6 days to complete. I was able to start fiberglassing the speaker mounts on the second day and even started sanding. I used an entire can of bondo, which surprised me. Then again, I had to bondo the majority of the back side since it's visible underneath the strut bar. Over the 6 days, I probably put 40 hours into it.

If I had to do it again, I could probably do it in half the time since I know where I made my mistakes. Having to cut the thing in half wasted a whole half day; probably even more than that because of all the bondo repair and sanding I had to do.

The total cost of everything from MDF to fiberglass resin is in the $200 range. I'm afraid to know how much someone would charge to build something like this. I doubt they'd put the same amount of time and care into it as I did. I definitely did have fun doing this though.

not bad for a diy effort at all could use more sanding hehe...but the overall execution is not too bad

Thanks. It's not perfect and my eyes tend to focus on the blemishes but out of everyone that's seen it, no one's said anything negative. I get compliments on it almost every day from random people and they're always amazed when I tell them that I made it.

Did it look anything like this? I built mine last year but never finished it, left it a mix of bondo, paint, and fiberglass, before I decided to stop inhaling fiberglass dust and just wrap it. Saves so much trunk space and I can still fit a tall bag or groceries between the strut and cabin.
