LCD screen ???
I'm looking at filling the void in the nav compartment with a LCD screen of some sort but not sure which one . Has anyone done this already? Might look into what Autobarn have. Any suggestions?
Hi Blue_350_z,
It sort of depends how much you want to spend and what sort of screen.
What sort of screen: you can go with a fold out screen that will replace the radio/cd and folds out of the head unit and into the area in front of the nav. compartment. The other option is to go with a flat screen that just sits in the nav. compartment itself.
Cost: If you go with the fold out screen they are often more expensive. However that being said there are some nice all in one packaged screens that have a whole range of features such as dvd capabilities. The screens that just sit in the nav. hole are less expensive (usually).
In relation to actual screens to purchase I know alpine makes one and i think that pioneer also might. I think the best option is to look in the audio section of the forum and do a search.
Hope I have been some sort of help,
Zdster

Thanks Zster, I will take a look at the Apline unit at the shops today.
I'm just looking to get some use out of the Nav area. It has bothered me from the beginning and seems to puzzle my pasengers a little as well.
Aust seems to have a different market for LCD screens compared to US which is why I didn't pay too much attention to the other posts.
Off to the shops.

Blue_350_z,
Glad I could help.
Do let me know what you find because I am also looking at this (or have been thinking about this)
The other question that I wanted to ask you is what size screen you are looking to put in. I was looking at the between 6.5-7".
I will be interested to find out what you see.

Alpine make one of the best LCDs on the market today. Clarion have also have an excellent screen, but its a single din all in one (Tuner/CD/DVD/LCD) deal.
I havnt picked up my Z yet, but i have been purchasing alot of audio gear on line. I bought an Alpine 6.5" screen from infinitecaraudio.com for AUS$980 delivered to my doorstep. In the shops it retails for close to AUS$2000.
If ur interested in buying premium audio gear, i offer u the advice of checking out some US online audio retailers. Ive saved thousands already.

If the setup is not to different from the US model ,and you dont mind paying for shipping, you can have it all Nav DVD and MP3s all in one unit.

While your system does sound good, Im not sure how practical it will be........but thats just me. The set up looks to be the same here in Aus so the actual equipment will fit, just the compartment is on the opposite side. I will keep a close watch on your post and see how things develop.
The only issue I can see is with the pc nav sytem.

ray_7 model no. is TME-M760. Here is a link to the site that i purchased it from;
http://www.infinitecaraudio.com/cgi-...alogno=TMEM760
Keep in mind tho that this is simply a screen, and on its own it will not display nething. U will need to additionally purchase a seperate DVD player, TV Tuner, NAV etc.
With the Aus models, we are somewhat gifted with having alot of space for adding a pretty comprehensive audio visual system. The Nav compartment is perfect for a screen, and can be hidden away from prying eyes when parked. The pockets in the rear parcel shelf r ideal for a hideaway DVD player and the double din slot lets us enjoy that horny SONY WX-7700MDX (AUS $780 from www.pricejapan.com vs. Sony Aus retail of $1999
)

chazzg,
I have been watching and reading the posts on building an in car pc for quite some time, but I have a few questions.
1. Have you resolved the heat issue. (Heat dissipation so that the computer doesnt burn out)
2. What would the cost be to get it to Australia?
3. When you say we would need a pc based nav. unit can you explain? Do you just mean a full nav unit like the ones people are just hooking to screens or do you mean a system that is pc based?
Thanks,
Zdster

2) I Don't know as of yet. email postal code or address and i can let you know
3) A Pc based NAV system is just a Nav/GPS Program with a GPS receiver that will run on a PC just like a laptop or a desktop.
Like this one http://www.delorme.com/earthmate/ But that is capable of working in your area. i will do some research to see if i can find one
Ive mentioned the Farenheit brand to my audio guy here in Melb, and he just gave me that weird "Faren who" look. The screen is a 7" whereas the Alpine is a 6.5", but for picture quality u cant go past the Alpine screen. Even in the daylight, the picture is as vibrant as ever.
Also, a small problem u have with the Farenheit, since it fully covers the Nav opening, u have to mount the IR somewhere. Some have used fibre optics to run the wiring to a point in the interior they can aim the remote at.
I purchased an Alpine DVD player too, so it all fits together nicely. Not sure what DVD player the Farenheit is compatible with. Im assuming tho, all connections from an LCD should be universal.

Hi, seeing as I've pretty much done everything you guys are talking about, I'm putting up links to the threads where I discussed it. I hope they help.
Pioneer Nav and Fareneheit Screen
Installation of Nav
Rear Panel Pics
The Alpine screen is fine, though I think it does require minimal cutting. Farenheit is not a big name in the US either, I'd never heard of it before I came to this board. Nazar occasionally carries it, I got mine on ebay. If somebody find one on ebay and is worried about shipping, tell me, ship it to me and we can work out how to send it to Australia. The screen has two video inputs, they're simply yellow RCA compatible inputs, like on the back of your VCR. No biggie, any DVD player will fit. Both the 7 and 5.6 inch screens fit perfectly, but obviously, I'd go with the 7 inch. Size does matter.
PM me if I can be of any more help.
