Car Security
As I’m getting delivery of new Z in 10 days I’m wondering what to do about security. The factory alarm/immobilizer gets a fairly low rating on the NRMA site - see http://www.nrma.com.au/pub/nrma/moto.../sports.shtml. From what the dealer tells me the immobilizer only works on the fuel tank whereas its possible to install a three point cutoff to fuel, ignition and starter and this can be done for around $300 after market –see http://www.mynrma.com.au/motoring/ca...ores/dev.shtml
I’d like to know what other owners are doing – from Quiktrak to after market alarm upgrades?

The dealer had a platinum demonstrator with 400kms on it and it has the orange seats which was my preference - but I couldn't get them with the blue - so hes agreed to swap them over for me. I think the burnt orange is a signature of the cars styling so I'm rapped to get blue with ornage seats!!
I'm seriously jealous. I originally ordered a Platinum with Orange but changed my mind once I saw the DB. Had to drive to Singleton (230km one way) to see it and fell in love. The only thing that I wasn't happy with was the black seats.
If it's okay with you, I'd like to see it when you get it. Let me know please.
I think you said your car arrived June 6th, same as mine. I get my DB Track this tuesday afternoon. Can't wait.

i'm tempted to get a tracker for the car (back on topic
)!
But it won't improve your insurance with any of the big companies.
BTW what prices are you guys getting for insurance? I got hit with 3 grand from GIO!

According to Nissan they will void your warranty if you install an alarm. This is what the Nissan service rep told me. So I explained to him I cannot get mine insured with Quik T. and this was his answer.
"Go back to insurer and tell them that they will not warranty the "wiring/electrics" in the car."
WTF ?
Anyway I think you willk have to prove that the QT system was not the cause of the problem but a problem with the 350z.
Best Alarm System
Sparkplug in fuel tank. Make sure you disarm before starting

NRMA were only reasonable at $2,100 (they are usually more expensive that AAMI).
I finally got a fair quote from Alianz at $1,600, which I took. If you use Allianz, make sure you pay for protection of your no claim bonus otherwise your premium will go up to approx $2900 the next year if you make an at fault claim
Also, in your first year at least, have the vehicle insured at market rate, not an agreed value that you paid for the car, as this is slightly cheaper. Anyhow, if the car is stollen / written off, you get a new one in the first 12 month, with all your options included. Please keep in mind that Allianz suited me in my situation / area and may be different in your situation. Shop around folks, or if your driving record isn't that crash hot (no pun intended) then you may be better off sticking with your current insurer.
It looks like many of us are leasing our cars. It was the only way I was going to afford a $60k+ vehicle. Likewise, my fleet lease is a self insurer for $800 p/a (pre-tax of course) so that's only $400 in real money.
I looked into the QT as a possible option, but my insurer said there was no benefit to me in doing so, and the leasing company just said "That's what insurance is for".
I only hope that if my car gets nicked that it doesn't come back, so I can get a new one or at least pay of the lease so I can start again.

I do have some advice though.
Make sure you know exactly what you are covered for and don't be complacent because it's cheap.
I had a claim earlier in the year and I was told my 18 month old 200SX Spec R with 30000k's was worth only $28k. New it was worth $48k. I know cars depreciate, but $20k in 18 months is a joke.
I finally got $32k for it.

1. Shannons will not insure the 350z in Sydney
2. Statistically they say that you are 90% more likely to have your car stolen again within 10 years if you had a car stolen and not recovered.
This is why I do not consider insurance "That's what insurance is for"
Try re-insuring when your car is stolen and not through a leasing company.
I personally consider that any sports car insurance premium under $2000 and in Sydney is a good price.

Bearing these recent thoughts in mind, I checked with my insurer. They said that's I get full new vehicle replacement within the first 12 months of ownership and after that it's market price based on the "Glass's (sp?) Guide".
I've not heard of it, I only know of the Red Book valuations.
Does anyone know what this 'Glass's Guide' has quoted the 350Z as for depreciation?
The recent Motoring mag write up had the 350Z as a 65% depreciation after 3 years based on the Red Book value.

I just don't understand how the Z, which is a several month young car can have a 65% valuation after 3 years???? I guess that Glass' are mearly using an average figure for now. Perhaps after 1 year where there may be a second hand market developed for the Z, it would be feasible to establish the cost of the car at that age and project out to 3 years, when this is compared with vehicles with similar 1st year depreciation values.
Are you saying that you think 65% is too high or too low?
When you take into account that the car (a tour) is approx. $65k on the road and at 35% depreciation over 3 years, this takes the car down to $42K. Which I think is way too high for a Japanese car.
When you work out a lease you have to take a stab at the residual value. This way you know how much to pay off the lease so you're not stuck with it, unable to sell the car when the lease is terminated without a hefty input from you.
I've worked on a 45% residual, plus GST, which comes out to approx. $29k after 4 years. I think I should be able to get close to that for the car with only 100-110K on the clock.
The second hand market will always take these cars well, look at how often you see 300Z's about even now, and goods ones go for $10-15k after 10 years.
Regards,
Jim

FWIW ~$2400 with GIO inc NCB protection. NRMA was ~$2950 and AAMI $1750. Went with GIO as they had the best policy. AAMI will approve repairs with non genuine and even "as new" parts. No thanks.
